Interview for Mashable | [iam-fan.com] Your best source for will.i.am

How did it go today?

Today went great. It?s a great moment. I had all the kids from the community center that I?m building in Boyle Heights in partnership with Laurene Jobs here to remind them that there are people here in the world that are building programs and platforms for them to change their lives and their communities through discipline around STEM education. That?s the mission I?m on now, and this whole beaming the song back from Mars to Earth is ? to inspire these kids.

What?s the nature of the partnership with Discovery Education that you and your foundation launched today?

This song ?Reach for the Stars? is not just a song, it?s a documentary about why it?s important for kids in inner cities to take a STEM interest. That documentary is going to be on the Science Channel later this month, so we?re going to do more educational content with Discovery Education that?s going to be in schools as a way to engage with the youth.

I remember when I was in high school, the stuff they taught me around science was kind of boring. No one really tried to talk the language and make content that?s digestible and tangible for science. Discovery does a good job of that and I wanted to partner with them to do more content like that.

Has science always been a passion for you?

I?m not a scientist and don?t claim to be, but I love the result of that discipline. I went to a science magnet school growing up so that?s what I wanted to be before I chose music. I wanted to study quantum physics out of high school, but I fell in love with music. So next year I?m going to take a computer science course to help prepare for the next 20 years of my life. I?m going back to school. Now that I?ve accomplished everything there is to accomplish in music, there ain?t nothing left to do.

Does this mean you?ll stop doing music? And where are you going to be going back to school?

I?m always gonna be doing music. I love it, I?m not going to stop. I just don?t wanna only do music for business. I want to do music to entertain and inspire. As far as computer science, I want to attend CalArts. I would love to go to MIT, but it?s far. I want to stay in California.

In your event today you spoke about ?STEAM? ? STEM plus the Arts. Do you think people separate these things too much?

The music industry and the entertainment industry are all technology and the marriage of art and science. Now that we have that, people forget that [entertainment] is all just based on technology and putting information on radio and broadcasting. If you think of the Internet, the Internet is just borrowing from yesterday?s marriage. Apps, [for example], are the result of the marriage of art and science.

Once governments know that, I think people are not gonna limit funding for education and science in schools. You don?t really hear football programs being cut because you know the result: It makes money somewhere. We need to start identifying the money that?s made through programs so they don?t cut money in schools.

How do you begin to address that?

We need to start putting other categories into the concept of art. I think people that make apps are artists. I think that people who write code for Facebook, that?s the new Rolling Stones. Think about the Rolling Stones and the music groups of the past, they filled up stadiums. The Beatles filled up stadiums. If you take the Beatles? songs and called them software played on hardware, that?s Facebook. Facebook is software that you play and experience on hardware. So Mark Zuckerberg, to me he ain?t nothing but freakin? John Lennon. Jack Dorsey, he ain?t nothing but Mick Jagger. Just a whole different level, man. Just bigger.

Is this what you want young musicians to think about?

I want to get the people who haven?t really made their mind up about whether they want to be a musician or a scientist to think about it. It?s the people that haven?t signed up for it yet that have a choice. ?Where am I gonna go? Am I gonna go down this road or that road?? Then fuck it, they never decide, and then the next thing they know, they?re 27, 30 years old and they get a job ? when they had every opportunity to create jobs.

I?m in a group that makes music and I create jobs. There?s like 500 people that work for me. Engineers, road guys, stage builders ? they?re very important to my world. My ideas create jobs. That reality for a kid to want to do music and have it as a business, the way it was yesterday isn?t the same. Touring still exists. Sharing is important. But monetizing it? I don?t know.

That?s why it?s so important for me to tell the kids, ?I got a little secret for you guys. Be scientists. Be technicians. Be engineers. Be mathematicians. Create new jobs in the future.? Ain?t nobody gonna tell you that. I?m tellin? you that. That?s what this is about.

Let?s get back to today. Where does this rank for you on your list of accomplishments?

I did the Grammys like 7 times. I?ve done the MTV Music Awards. I?ve done the Super Bowl twice. I?ve played the World Cup. I?ve played the Grey Cup in Canada and the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee. I?ve played in front of 2 million people on a beach in Brazil. After all those things, standing up on stage at NASA with my mom in the audience and my song being beamed back from another planet is the biggest. Out of all the artists in the world, out of all the people that make music on the planet, I got a song coming from another planet. It?s because I stand for trying to change communities around science. The song was made to inspire kids to want to be scientists, space explorers and create new products and technologies that are sustainable. That?s the reason my song got beamed back, not because I?m the dopest musician on the earth.

Anything else you want to add?

Power to the geeks.

Giuliana and Bill Rancic welcome a baby boy

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Bill Rancic announced the birth of his and Giuliana Rancic's first child, Edward Duke, early Thursday morning.?

"The 'Duke' has landed!" tweeted Bill. "Edward Duke Rancic was welcomed into the world last night at 7lbs 4oz. G & I feel blessed beyond words...We did it!"

E! reported that the four-hour labor went smoothly, and that both Bill and Giuliana were in the delivery room for the birth?via a gestational surrogate hired by the Rancics. Bill cut the umbilical cord, and Giuliana was the first to hold the baby, then passed him over to her husband. They both fed little Edward, and told E! that the child was doing well and already had been bathed for the first time.?

"Bill and I are blessed beyond words to welcome Edward into our lives," Giuliana told E! "Thank you so much to everyone who supported us along the way. We are so in love with the little guy already!"

It was a long road for the Rancics, who shared their journey on TODAY in multiple appearances. Last year, they shared Giuliana's fight with infertility and the breast cancer that was discovered while she was in treatment, then returned in April to explain how they would use a gestational surrogate to bring their child into the world.

Giuliana was true to her word, promising back in June that she wouldn't give their upcoming baby boy any "Hollywood-type, weird name that people can't pronounce."

As for whether little Ed Duke will appear on their Style network reality show "Giuliana & Bill," fans will just have to wait and see.?"We've thought about that," she told E! in June. "It's definitely come up in conversation, and it's this sort of thing where I think we just need to have the baby first and then figure out is this going to work or not."

Congrats to the new parents!

Sony launches STR-DA5800ES home cinema AV receiver: true 4K output, 9.2 surround sound

DNP STRDA5800ES home cinema

Sony's just launched a high-end home cinema receiver that's finally good enough to pair up with its IFA-fresh Bravia KD-84X9005 TV or existing VPL-VW1000ES 4K projector. On top of native 4K for supported displays, the receiver will upscale standard HD movies, promising greater color, contrast and detail. For audiophiles, the system has 9.2 channels of surround sound for so-called Front High and Surround Back speakers, on top of the standard 5.1 speaker setup. A feature called "Movie Height" enables the sound to be virtually adjusted up or down to better match the screen position, and acoustics can be selected to match famous concert halls like those in Vienna or Berlin. Finally, you can take advantage of all that Hi-Fi and display tech by streaming from your laptop, smartphone or tablet through a LAN hub on the receiver. There's no availability or pricing yet, but if you're not too concerned about that money stuff, check the PR for the rest of the story.

Mums@Work Singapore ? Tipping the Scales of Balance

?- decided to cancel a biz meeting (which led to loss of a biz deal), because my toddler woke up late for school. Spent the morning with her at a nearby park, had a lunch of forbidden hot-dogs & loads of fun. As I dropped her off @ school for the rest of the day, her ?Thank you Mummy? made me realise that sometimes to achieve that work-family balance, you got to give up on some things. And is it worth it? Yep! Yep! Yep!?

So read my Facebook Status update, a day after the Prime Minister had delivered his National Day Rally Speech. PM Lee Hsien Loong spoke about the Singapore government?s plans to encourage marriage and parenthood. He brought up the case of the female teacher, with 4 children who mentioned her desire for work-life balance, and yet felt that it was not for the government to give. She probably spoke on behalf of many mothers in Singapore.

As PM Lee highlighted, there are likely to be initiatives targeting employers to encourage more practices that support work-life balance in the next few months. Flexible Work Arrangements could possibly be encouraged through financial grants or somewhat similar options. The civil service could lead by example and showing how Flexible Work Arrangements can be implemented in an organization.

Yet, the question remains: Are financial incentives sufficient?

Some of the most successful flexible work arrangements I have personally come across are not established officially. It is a mutually-agreed upon decision made between a supervisor and his/ her team member. When questioned why the arrangement has to be done on such hush-hush terms, the answer usually ties back to the fear of more employees requesting for the same. How can top management view Flexible Work Arrangement less negatively?

It is really mindset change that is required in order for work-life balance to be achieved. After all, how many converts can a ?Let?s not laugh at our colleague who leaves work on time? campaign create?

Rather than just offering money, the government can look at ways to educate employers on how Flexible Work Arrangements can be a win-win situation for both employer and employee. Create genuinely helpful platforms whereby employers can seek help in offering flexible work arrangement positions. Set up technological support teams that facilitate work-from-home arrangements.

The rules can be in place ? but these are issues that are intangible and would take a much longer time to change. PM Lee rightfully said that it is not money that is the question here, but values and deep motivation.

To strike a balance is defined as ?to make a compromise?. In essence, work-life balance is about compromise. Parents need to ask themselves: What can you give up to achieve what you want? And more importantly, what do you want?

I have often met stay at home mothers that gave up their careers to look after their children. Their roles are often downplayed. Looking at many of the current parenthood incentives, one would think that a woman gets penalized for ??taking a few years out from her career, to start a family.? Yet, many stay at home mothers often speak of the joys of motherhood. Highlighting their personal stories ? their positive experience of a fulfilled family life could also be great inspiration. Incentives that benefit stay at home mothers can also be considered, if the real goal of higher fertility rate is to be reached.

I lost my business deal because of the last minute cancellation, but I got quality time with my 4 year old daughter. To me, that tip of the scales, to achieve momentary balance was worth it. ?

(AP) ? College football is in for some big and, some say, much-needed changes with the switch to a four-team playoff.

Before we get to that, there's still a couple more seasons under the current system; the playoffs don't begin until 2014.

And this one will be worth watching.

There's plenty of interesting story lines, from Penn State trying to rebuild in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal to Urban Meyer's return to coaching with Ohio State.

There's no shortage of great players, either.

Southern California quarterback Matt Barkley skipped the NFL for the chance at a national title, Michigan's Denard Robinson is a blur even without his shoelaces tied and Wisconsin's Montee Ball is like trying to tackle a wrecking ball.

Great teams? Could be a few of those, too. USC, LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma, Oregon ? the BCS could be under a lot of strain this season with those teams all bidding for No. 1.

So to get you ready, we've got a rundown of some of the things to watch out for this season.

Enjoy.

___

TOP TEAMS

USC. Barkley is back. So is his top target, Robert Woods. Former Penn State running back Silas Redd was a nice addition. Postseason eligible again, the Trojans aren't aiming for just any bowl; they want a trip to Miami and national championship.

Alabama. The Crimson Tide have won two of the past three national championships. They figure to be contenders for another.

LSU. The Honey Badger is gone. All those other NFL prospects ? such as defensive end Sam Montgomery and safety Eric Reid ? should keep the Tigers from missing him.

Oklahoma. The Sooners have a record-setting QB in Landry Jones, a brick wall of an offensive line and with the return of Mike Stoops, Bob's feisty little brother, they should be good on defense, too.

Oregon. LaMichael James and Darron Thomas are gone? Big deal. The Ducks have plenty of other players who can fly in those new winged unis.

___

KEEP AN EYE ON

Arkansas. QB Tyler Wilson and RB Knile Davis are back, coach John L. Smith has calmed the storm after Bobby Petrino's motorcycle crash and subsequent firing. All Arkansas has to do now is get by Alabama and LSU ? its only two losses a year ago ? which isn't as farfetched as you might think. Both visit the Natural state, one early (Alabama on Sept. 15) the other late (LSU the day after Thanksgiving)

Florida State. The Seminoles' return to prominence has been rumored for years. Under coach Jimbo Fisher, it may actually happen this season.

Wisconsin. The Badgers are hungry after consecutive Rose Bowl losses and they have Ball, one of the nation's best running backs.

Michigan State. Behind RB Le'Veon Bell, the Spartans could be on the verge of breaking a Rose Bowl drought that goes back to 1988.

Texas. Mack Brown's crew appears to be headed back to the big stage behind a helmet-rattling defense.

West Virginia. The Mountaineers could make their first season in the Big 12 championship worthy.

___

TOP PLAYERS

Barkley, USC. Projected as a high NFL draft pick, Barkley became an instant Heisman Trophy front-runner when he announced he was coming back for his senior season.

Ball, Wisconsin. The Badgers' star running back changed the pronunciation of his name from Mon-tee to Mon-tay. Whatever you call him, dude's good.

Robinson, Michigan. The Wolverines' electric quarterback has churned out more than 8,000 yards in his career, most of those the past two seasons. Imagine what he could do if he tied his shoes.

Geno Smith, West Virginia. The Mountaineers' QB set multiple school records as a junior and more could be on the way in his final season in Morgantown.

Barkevious Mingo, LSU. Been known to train wreck offensive linemen.

Jones, Oklahoma. He's been around since Barry Switzer was coach. OK, maybe not that long, but the four-year starter will leave as the most prolific passer in OU history.

De'Anthony Thomas, Oregon. Spectacular as a freshman last season and will likely get more touches this season now that James is in the NFL.

Marcus Lattimore, South Carolina. Back from a torn ACL last season, he should be one of the nation's top running backs this year.

___

BIG GAMES

Sept. 1, Michigan vs. Alabama at Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas. The annual opener at Jerry Jones' funhouse has had some great matchups in the past. This one could be the best of the bunch.

Sept. 15, Alabama at Arkansas. Winner could get the inside track on a national-title run.

Sept. 22, Michigan at Notre Dame. Last season's epic finish makes this a must-watch.

Oct. 13, Oklahoma vs. Texas in Dallas. The Red River rivalry continues after all the conference shuffling and could become epic again with these two teams on the rise.

Oct. 27, Notre Dame at Oklahoma. A rare meeting between power programs.

Nov. 3, Alabama at LSU. We may not get sucked into calling it the Game of the Century again, but it still figures to have national-title implications.

Nov. 3, Oregon at USC. Triple digits in combined points is a possibility with all those playmakers on the field.

Nov. 24, Michigan at Ohio State. Meyer is running the Buckeyes and Michigan appears to be back. This rivalry could be heating back up.

___

THE NEW GUYS

There was quite a bit of turnover in the coaching ranks over the offseason, with some pretty big names landing in new places. Here's a few:

Bob Davie, New Mexico. Away from coaching for a decade, Davie tries to turn around a program plagued by embarrassments on and off the field under Mike Locksley.

Todd Graham, Arizona State. The fast-talking Texan has done everything right in Tempe so far, soothing concerns about bouncing around while building excitement for the program. All that's left is to win some games.

Mike Leach, Washington State. His offenses are always entertaining. So's his mouth.

Meyer, Ohio State. Burned out no more, the two-time national champion coach returns to the sideline with one of the country's premier programs ? and too many references to an Urban renewal.

Bill O'Brien, Penn State. The former o-coordinator of the New England Patriots might have the toughest job in the country.

Rich Rodriguez, Arizona. RichRod's three-year run at Michigan didn't go so well, but he has Tucson buzzing about football again with his suped-up offense.

Smith, Arkansas. The Razorbacks needed someone to smooth over the ugliness of Bobby Petrino's firing. The even-keel Smith should be a good fit.

Charlie Weis, Kansas. Weis' first stint as a head coach petered out at Notre Dame. The Jayhawks are hoping he can turn around a program that languished under Turner Gill.

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? The Netherlands scrambled two F16 fighter jets Wednesday to escort a Spanish passenger plane to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport after air traffic controllers could not make contact with the aircraft's crew.

Dutch media initially reported a possible hijacking, but local police and Vueling, the Spanish carrier whose jet was at the center of the scare, later confirmed there was never a hijacking or a hostage situation.

"Amsterdam's protocol for security was activated owing to a temporary loss of communication between the plane and air traffic control," Vueling said in a tweet.

The Dutch Defense Ministry said the F16s were scrambled when no radio contact could be made with the plane, which was carrying more than 180 passengers. The ministry's statement said that F16s are sent up to "establish visual contact with the crew" whenever a plane is in Dutch airspace and cannot be contacted by radio.

After it landed, the Vueling Airbus 320 taxied to a remote corner of Schiphol about two kilometers (1.5 miles) from the main terminal and was immediately surrounded by security personnel and several ambulances. A bus later arrived to ferry the passengers to the airport.

National Dutch broadcaster NOS spoke by phone with a person it identified as one of the passengers who said that there was no panic on board. "Everything is calm," the passenger said shortly after the plane landed.

A Vueling spokeswoman said one of the company's planes had a similar communication problem while flying the same route last year.

She said the problem occurred over France and that France sent up a Mirage 2000 to escort it for a while. The plane was allowed to continue its journey and land as planned. The spokeswoman was unable to say if it involved the same plane or pilot. She spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with company rules.

The security alert in Amsterdam came as part of Schiphol Airport already was evacuated and several flights had been delayed or cancelled after workmen digging a trench unearthed a 500-kilogram (1,100-pound) German World War II bomb. The bomb was safely removed by late afternoon.

Nazi forces who occupied the Netherlands in WWII took over Schiphol and used it as a base for Luftwaffe aircraft. It was repeatedly bombed by Allied and German air forces during the war.

pregnancy reflections | lists in my pocket

I disappeared for five months?a little bit there around 20 weeks?.oops. The absence from blogging was good for me though. I felt like I wanted to protect our privacy at the time, and I also was busy with the business of growing a baby. Serious work. All good priorities, but now I miss blogging, so we?ll give it a go again!

A lot of pregnancy/baby blogs post weekly updates in the format of the one below. I did them periodically so as to put them in a baby book one day, but for the purpose of catching you up, here?s my pregnancy with Caroline all at once.

Top row, left to right:?15 weeks, 18 weeks, 22 weeks
Second row, left to right: 27 weeks, 30 weeks, 36 weeks

How far along??Summary of weeks 5 (when we found out) through 39 weeks and 5 days

Total weight gain:?About 30 pounds total. There was a month where I gained 9 pounds (and subsequently refused to look at the scale again) and there were periods where I didn?t gain any weight at all. It was strange at first watching the scale go up after all the attempts in the past to maintain or lose weight. I stopped caring about halfway through though ? my doctors could have cared less and were very encouraging about just being healthy. Vanity, both when you are growing a little baby and when the heat becomes so unbearable that you can?t think about anything else, seemed pointless. :)

Maternity clothes??Oh yes. I had the band from 14-16 weeks or so but didn?t like the feeling of my pants constantly falling down. After 16 weeks I rocked the full panel pants and as I got bigger could only wear a few of my old shirts. The last 4-6 weeks my ankles were so swollen (starting at 9am, thankyouverymuch) I had Shrek feet, plus it was often 100 degrees or more, so I wore a lot of skirts and maxi-dresses.

Sleep:?Except for a short period of intense heartburn in the middle of the night, I slept great throughout the entire pregnancy. It was certainly different ? I missed sleeping on my stomach and then eventually my back. The last 2 months I was on either side surrounded by body pillows and I had a lot of lower back pain, but I still slept well thankfully.

Best moments in the pregnancy:?Too hard to nail down just one! Telling Shawn we were pregnant, telling our families, feeling the baby move or watching my stomach as she rolled and kicked, preparing the nursery, feeling proud and confident in my body, baby showers with family and friends, taking our last vacation just the two of us.

Miss Anything??I could probably go another 10 months without alcohol but I did miss a glass of Riesling every now and then. I desperately and intensely missed hot dogs and lunch meat. I dreamed about italian subs, mmmm. I also missed my body not feeling painful or slow.

Movement:?I felt a couple flutters at 16 weeks but felt the baby kick for real after downing a slice of cake at a coworker?s baby shower. It was exciting and special every time.

Food cravings:?None really. I ate more fruit and sweet stuff (than usual) towards the end but never felt a deep craving.

Anything making you queasy or sick:?In weeks 5-12, pretty much everything made me nauseous. I was lucky to never be sick but I really only wanted to eat bread or pizza for awhile there.

Gender:?Girl! I never had another sonogram after 20 weeks though so after we painted the nursery pink and bought girly bedding, I worried it was a boy. A boy would have been lovely?.just wanted to know for sure either way. :)

Labor Signs:?Birth story to come, but I had Braxton Hicks (very mild) throughout most of the pregnancy.

Symptoms:?Nausea, round ligament pain, extra strong sense of smell, hot all the time towards the end, swollen ankles, heartburn, lower back pain, shooting pain in my right foot

Belly Button in or out??In

Wedding rings on or off??On

Happy or Moody most of the time:?Happy! Really didn?t experience a lot of hormonal changes, but I found that every stage of the pregnancy had distinct emotions with it. There were periods where I felt really excited and confident and periods where I was more anxious and mourned the end of our family being just the two of us.

Looking forward to:?We looked forward to lots of things ? the next sonogram, finding out the gender, our baby showers, showing more, and finally getting to see and meet our little girl.

New tissue scaffold could be used for drug development and implantable therapeutic devices

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- To control the three-dimensional shape of engineered tissue, researchers grow cells on tiny, sponge-like scaffolds. These devices can be implanted into patients or used in the lab to study tissue responses to potential drugs.

A team of researchers from MIT, Harvard University and Boston Children's Hospital has now added a new element to tissue scaffolds electronic sensors. These sensors, made of silicon nanowires, could be used to monitor electrical activity in the tissue surrounding the scaffold, control drug release or screen drug candidates for their effects on the beating of heart tissue.

The research, published online Aug. 26 in Nature Materials, could also pave the way for development of tissue-engineered hearts, says Robert Langer, the David H. Koch Institute Professor at MIT and a senior author of the paper.

"We are very excited about this study," Langer says. "It brings us one step closer to someday creating a tissue-engineered heart, and it shows how novel nanomaterials can play a role in this field."

Lead authors of the paper are Bozhi Tian, a former postdoc at MIT and Children's Hospital; Jia Liu, a Harvard graduate student; and Tal Dvir, a former MIT postdoc. Other senior authors are Daniel Kohane, director of the Laboratory for Biomaterials and Drug Delivery at Children's Hospital, and Charles Lieber, a Harvard professor of chemistry.

A 3-D system

Until now, the only cellular platforms that incorporated electronic sensors consisted of flat layers of cells grown on planar metal electrodes or transistors. Those two-dimensional systems do not accurately replicate natural tissue, so the research team set out to design a 3-D scaffold that could monitor electrical activity, allowing them to see how cells inside the structure would respond to specific drugs.

The researchers built their new scaffold out of epoxy, a nontoxic material that can take on a porous, 3-D structure. Silicon nanowires embedded in the scaffold carry electrical signals to and from cells grown within the structure.

"The scaffold is not just a mechanical support for cells, it contains multiple sensors. We seed cells into the scaffold and eventually it becomes a 3-D engineered tissue," Tian says.

The team chose silicon nanowires as its electronic sensors because they are small, stable, can be safely implanted into living tissue, and are more electrically sensitive than metal electrodes. The nanowires, which range in diameter from 30 to 80 nanometers (about 1,000 times smaller than that of a human hair), can detect voltages less than one-thousandth of a watt, which is the level of electricity that might be seen in a cell.

Monitoring cell behavior

In the Nature Materials study, the researchers used their scaffolds to grow cardiac, neural and muscle tissue. Using the engineered cardiac tissue, the researchers were able to monitor cells' response to noradrenalin, a stimulant that typically increases heart rate.

The team also grew blood vessels with embedded electronic sensors and showed they could be used to measure pH changes within and outside the vessels. Such implantable devices could allow doctors to monitor inflammation or other biochemical events in patients who receive the implants. Ultimately, the researchers would like to engineer tissues that can not only sense an electrical or chemical event, but also respond to it appropriately for example, by releasing a drug.

"It could be a closed feedback loop, much as our autonomic nervous system is," Kohane says. "The nervous system senses changes in some part of the body and sends a message to the central nervous system, which then sends a message back to take corrective action."

The team is now further studying the mechanical properties of the scaffolds and making plans to test them in animals.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the McKnight Foundation and Boston Children's Hospital.

Obama says he wants to preserve Medicare

(AP) ? The Medicare program is about keeping promises to millions of seniors who have put in a lifetime of hard work, President Barack Obama said Saturday in his radio and Internet address and in a new campaign ad.

The president used his weekly address to discuss the surging campaign issue, saying his goal is to strengthen Medicare and preserve the program for future generations. He made no mention of Republican rival Mitt Romney in the address.

But the new 30-second television ad says Romney "would break that promise" and replace the current Medicare system with a voucher program that wouldn't keep up with costs.

"Insurance companies could just keep raising rates," the new ad says.

Under a plan proposed by Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, starting in 2023 Medicare would be radically changed. New retirees would get a fixed amount of government money to pick either private health insurance or a federal plan modeled on Medicare. Ryan says that would keep the program solvent.

The Obama administration says the change could cost retirees as much as $6,400 a year.

Romney has accused Obama of cutting more than $700 billion from Medicare to pay for his health care law.

In the Republican's weekly address, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky said the nation is being hurt by "the looting of the Treasury and 20 years of deficit spending."

Meet Mainstream Mitt

ANALYSIS

TAMPA, Fla. - Meet mainstream Mitt. If voters are not intimately acquainted with him by the end of the week, they may not get a chance to meet him again.

Mitt Romney's challenge at the Republican National Convention this week will be to yank a party and a biography that aren't particularly oriented to the center back toward the middle.

Outside forces have blown with more force than even Hurricane Isaac. Tea party activists and Ron Paul's libertarian forces have beaten Romney to Florida with voices of their own, reminders of a fractious primary campaign that left Romney battered.

It's been a messy precursor to the convention: Missouri Senate candidate's odd comments regarding rape and abortion fueled Democratic attempts to make the election into a war over women. Romney and the full Republican Party apparatus have tried to banish Rep. Todd Akin over those comments, fearful that they'll tug perceptions of the party back toward the extremes.

"I think it was a terrible statement on his part," Romney said of Akin on "Fox News Sunday." "I think it was outrageous and offensive. I've asked him to get out of the race. I think I've distanced myself from the kind of thing he said as far as I possibly can."

Romney's selection of Rep. Paul Ryan hasn't helped with that distance, at least not yet. Democratic attempts to link Ryan to Akin have dominated the run-up to Tampa - stories Romney needs to put an end to, and fast.

As for Romney himself, his challenge will be connecting his biography to the message - and getting back on a message focusing on issues of jobs and the economy.

The nation has learned much about Romney, but filtered mostly through a lens crafted by President Obama and his allies. In their telling, Romney's elite background and easy-to-mock business record have been fodder, not strengths.

That needs to change this week for Romney. The convention schedule, even if shortened, will prominently feature members of Romney's family and church, in addition to people affected by his business and other professional endeavors.

Ann Romney, naturally, is central to that strategy. She's the Romney campaign's not-so-secret weapon, the key to unlocking what the campaign sees as the real Romney.

She's also the speaker Democrats feel will be most effective in communicating that message this week, with her speech on the new opening night, Tuesday.

The good news for Republicans is that the candidate's biography fits with the campaign message, as it always has. Romney does have a good story to tell when it comes to his business record and his time in public service, running the Olympics in 2002, and as governor of Massachusetts.

The more difficult news is that this isn't the first time they've tried to tell that story. Storm or not, controlling the message isn't a given, even during a party's own convention.

Toads Drink Coffee: Kale Salad

This week we received a bundle of Curly Kale in our CSA box along with a recipe from Hannah for kale salad. Denis isn?t a big fan of kale, and I mostly like the idea of it more than the actual thing. However, I try to be a fan because? kale is full of vitamins and powerful anti-cancer properties and many other things that are GOOD for you, dear. Perhaps I?m late to the table, but I have found two surprising new ways to actually enjoy it as food, not medicine. I?ve made lots of kale chips this summer. Easy. Cut off stems and slice up the sides of the larger ribs, discard, cut or tear the remaining leaf into 2 inch squares. Toss in a bowl with a little olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Optional: grate on a little parmesan cheese. Spread on a cookie sheet and bake at 300 degrees for 20 minutes or until crunchy. They will turn dark.? Store in a zip-lock bag to keep crisp.

The other new way to serve is as a salad which retains all its raw goodness. Honest, this could make a kale-lover out of the most picky critic. With friends for dinner the other night, I made this and not a bite was left over. In the past, I?ve tried it as a salad and it just didn?t work. Too tough and had a bitter flavor. But this was fabulous. You should try it.

Raw Tuscan Salad

1 bunch Tuscan kale (This is a more tender variety, but others can be substituted.)

? c homemade garlic bread crumbs

1 clove garlic

? c finely grated pecorino (or other sharp cheese such as asiago or parmesan)

3 T olive oil

Fresh squeezed juice of 1 lemon (I used a lime)

? t kosher salt

Fresh ground pepper, to taste

Trim lower stem and larger ribs off kale and discard. Slice kale into ? wide ribbons. Place kale in large bowl. Using a mortar and pestle or back of a knife, pound garlic into a paste. Transfer garlic to a small bowl. Add ? cup chees, oil, juice, etc. Whisk to combine. Pour dressing over kale and toss very well to coat leaves. Let salad sit for 5 minutes, serve topped with a few more bread crumbs, another dash of olive oil, and a sprinkle of additional cheese.

Wall Street Journal to offer free WiFi hotspots in NYC and San Francisco during September

Oh New Yorkers and their marvelous, no-cost WiFi access points. Only a few days after Google Offers and Boingo happily announced they'd brought gratis wireless connectivity to additional underground locations within the city, The Wall Street Journal is now let it be known it too will be kind enough to gift the NYC crowd with some WiFi hotspots of its own. The nice gesture will bring around 1,300 network units to areas such as SoHo, Greenwich Village, Union Square, Chelsea and, naturally, the renowned Times Square during the month of September -- all in hopes of giving "people the opportunity to sample The Wall Street Journal." Meanwhile, folks in San Francisco can also grab the internet-friendly freebies in a couple of different places, including Nob Hill and Fisherman's Wharf. And don't worry, there won't be any donkeys involved here.
