Oh dear. Yesterday we reported that the Sony Xperia Play had seemed to have fallen off the back of the Sony Ice Cream Sandwich wagon. Now Sony?s made the official announcement: the Playstation Phone won?t be joining the Android 4.0 party. Ever. Why not? Read on to find out?
It?s not good news for the old Xperia Play. While a whole ream of other Sony and Sony Ericsson devices are still awaiting their fateful jump into Android 4.0, the Play has failed its initiation.
?In regards to Xperia Play,? begins Sony Mobile?s official blog posting, ?after extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich. ? therefore, we will not make the Android 4.0 upgrade available for Xperia Play.?

Ouch. Whilst sales of the Xperia Play were never ground-breaking, this is a real blow to one of Sony?s most interesting handsets.? ?This decision was also verified when we received similar feedback from the developer community; both experienced developers and advanced users,? continues Sony?s statement, referring to the beta rollout of ICS that was issued earlier this year.
?Our priority has and always will be, to provide the best possible user experience on Xperia smartphones. In this instance the ICS upgrade would have compromised stability, where we look to ensure a quality gaming experience with games optimized and developed for Xperia Play.? So where does that leave the Play?
Sony?s Playstation Suite comeback plan
Nowhere good ? as a symbol of where Sony?s intentions lie, it?s not a very positive message about the Android Playstation Suite as a whole. The problem is apparently with gaming, which suggests that there?s some element of Android 4.0 that doesn?t really get on with either the slide-out controls or perhaps some facet of the graphically intensive PS games themselves.
