Siddhartha Sarma:

There was a time, before the city skyline changed and so did our lifestyles, when diving into a clear pond or lake at a moment?s notice was a fun thing to do. That was then. Today you need to range far and wide to find such a water body anywhere around the city. What you have, instead, are swimming pools and this is just the right season to take up the sport for your whole family. There are nothing but benefits, if you do your homework and are ready to go the whole distance.

There are different categories of such pools in the city. The B P Chaliha Swimming Pool at the Nehru Stadium has for long been a mainstay both for serious and recreational swimmers. However, it saw a trough recently with toxic cyanobacteria being discovered. It has since been cleaned and spruced up and is open to both members and the public. For the latter, a plunge, literally, costs Rs100 an hour. Dighalipukhuri, which saw swimming classes periodically in the times past, is out of the picture.

The best facilities in the city are undoubtedly at the aquatic complex at Sarusajai Stadium, with an Olympic size pool and many visitors. However, Sarusajai?s distance from the city means working people can only go on weekends, although these days school students are more in number during weekdays too.

?Both B P Chaliha and Sarusajai are open to the public for recreational swimming, besides for athletes undergoing more rigourous training. The pools and surrounding facilities are maintained properly in a hygienic manner,? says S S Roy, officer on special duty with the sports department. For those wanting to take up swimming on a less regular basis, these government facilities are available at Rs100 per hour.

The second type of swimming facility available in Guwahati is the several hotels and resorts downtown and in the outlying areas, most of which are available for guests as well as visitors.

Photo: Stephen Styris

?The rates are Rs100 per hour. If someone wants a membership for regular visits, it is Rs1,500 per month. The pool is open for children from 3 pm to 6 pm, for ladies from 5 pm to 7 pm and for gents from 7 pm to 9 pm,? says Binod Chandra Das, incharge of swimming facilities at Hotel Grand Starline on G S Road.

However, barring some of the larger resorts, most hotel swimming pools, owing to space constraints, are smaller than regulation size and can only accommodate a few swimmers at a time. Bigger private pools like Dolphin near Zoo Road are also open for regular visitors at nominal rates.

The third kind are swimming facilities at schools, which are of regulation size. However, barring a few like Don Bosco High School, school facilities are not available for non-students or other children or adults. ?For our students who are undergoing swimming training, we have made arrangements for proper guidance and care, as well as safety measures. The pool is kept clean, treated and drained regularly,? says an official with the Delhi Public School, Guwahati.

Although several options are available in the city, the matter of hygiene is important, as untreated water or bacterial formations can cause several reactions and diseases. The cyanobacteria manifestation mentioned earlier, for instance, can lead to skin and gastrointestinal problems. Therefore if you want to take to swimming, either as a recreation or for serious healthy living, you will need to check the pool facilities, whether they are treated with chlorine in the exact amount and whether the water is drained regularly so bacteria does not form, since the climate of the region makes still water prone to various bacteria. ?The pool is closed once a week, on Thursday, when the water is drained and fresh treated water pumped in. We take care that the facilities are hygienic,? says Das. Stadium officials also state that, particularly because of the large number of members using facilities, care is taken so that the water does not cause problems to swimmers.

Once you have decided which swimming pool to frequent, you must also accessorise properly, with goggles, cap and proper, comfortable and rash-resistant swimwear. Professional swimmers will immediately remark on the importance of accessories. ?Whether one is a new swimmer or intends to spend several hours a day in the pool, one must get the right accessories and not compromise on quality. It is your body at stake,? says champion swimmer and trainer Elvis Ali Hazarika.

Professionals also advise supplementing your diet with healthy food and hydrating your system frequently. Moreover, both before and after swimming, you need to take care of your body with a proper hygiene regimen, including bathing in warm water to reduce skin tanning, as mentioned in the accompanying story. ?Everything needs to be checked, from the quality of water to what skincare product and soap you are using, to prevent dermatological reactions, particularly in this climate,? saysskin specialist Pankaj Adhikari. ?The water may even cause internal problems if it is not of the right quality.? Once you have everything in place, go ahead and take the plunge, literally. This is one of the best exercises for your body, and whether you want to be the next Michael Phelps or just want to cool off and work out in the water, you can be assured it will be time spent well.

Swimming accessories

It is not just about leaping into the water. You need to be kitted out in reliable accessories to prevent skin, hair or eye problems and to be comfortable. The rule is not just to go by brands, because there are fake ones in the market as well. Here is what to look out for.

Goggles

In case of any problem with the quality of water, your eyes will be the first to feel it. Therefore a reliable pair of plastic swimming goggles is a must. Do not compromise on quality, choose one which is airtight and will not leak inside when you are under water. There are many brands available, but there is a risk of some of them being fakes. Check the straps and quality of rubber or other material around the eyepieces thoroughly. Goggles come at a wide budget range. Cosco, a known sportswear brand, for instance, begins at Rs330 plus. Anything lower is probably a fake. Tribord also has different ranges, from Rs175 to Rs300. If you want to go really high up and ensure quality, try Arena?s goggles. The Arena Cobra, a pair of mirror goggles, comes at Rs2,400. Arena?s Venture and Tracks are also meant for serious pros but you can be assured of quality performance.

Cap

One item children seem to remember more than adults, although swimming instructors recommend this for everyone. It is not just for helping you swim faster. A cap helps protect your hair from reactions to chemicals in treated water. It is a must regardless of how much time per day you spend in the pool. Cosco, Tribord, Nabaji and some other brands come for around Rs100-Rs150. These days you also get caps made of coated mesh to hold in your hair more snugly and comfortably. A coated mesh cap from a known brand is for not less than Rs270-Rs280.

Swimwear

The most important accessory, it needs to be chosen based on several criteria. The first is functionality. Your costume should be comfortable both in and out of the pool. It might look good on you, but if the material or design ends up leaving rashes on your skin or chafe marks, it does not help. For children, a reliable brand at reasonable prices begins from Rs400-Rs600. For women, a Tribord one-piece comes at around Rs1,800, while men?s wear can range from Rs700 to Rs1,500 or higher. If you are willing to splurge, though, you can opt for some serious swimwear, like the Arena Powerskin XP Jammer, a

speedo lookalike for men but more comfortable, at about Rs6,800. Another Arena Powerskin, also shorts for men, comes for Rs9,800, while the Powerskin equivalent for women comes for Rs6,000. But with a Powerskin, as they say, you go places.

Optionals

Apart from these basic items, you can choose a few more accessories, just in case. Children and new swimmers (if a grownup doesn?t mind being seen in them) can go for inflatable armbands which come at around Rs350-400. A swimbelt is also effective for new enthusiasts and a good brand like Aptonia comes at around Rs300-Rs350. If you do need a vest, you can get one from Rs1,000 to Rs2,300. But that is in case you don?t trust the lifeguard much.

Home pools

If you just want the kids to splash around at home, and you can spare the water, you can also get one of those inflatable pools, which can accommodate four people at a time. Ensure that the water is clean and the pool, on being deflated, is stored properly. They come for around Rs4,500.

Care before and after the water

Swimming is one of the best exercises for your entire body. It not just cools you down during summers, it also uses all your muscles and builds lung power and stamina. But you need to take care of your body and skin after a dip and even before. Dr Pankaj Adhikari and former international swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika recommend some simple tips to ensure you only benefit from this sport.

Ensure the water does not have too much chlorine, which is harmful to the skin. Swimming pools are cleaned with chlorine but too much content in the water is counterproductive, causing eye and hair problems too. One of the most immediate effects of chlorinated water is darkening of skin.

Chlorine dries your skin and prevents it from retaining its normal moisture level, which leads to a tanning effect, making your skin dark. To prevent this, take a bath immediately after stepping out of the pool. The water you take a shower of must be lukewarm. Cold water will not help. Use a mild soap, not a strong deodorising sports soap, to be gentle to your skin. Also, several lotions and skin creams are available which can be applied after the bath. Waterproof sunscreen lotions are particularly recommended.

However, be cautious in choosing these lotions because some may have chemicals which may make the skin darker instead. Also, a combination of chlorinated water, soap, warm water and lotion chemicals may trigger off an allergic reaction like rashes. Ensure the lotion does not contain an allergen. Make a checklist of the allergies you might be prone to and check the ingredients of the skincare lotion so that your particular allergy is not triggered.

Moisturise your skin as well

Once you start swimming regularly, add supplements to your diet, such as Vitamin C, to counteract any possible skin problems or reactions and to boost your body?s immune system. Also, ensure your diet is balanced properly so that your body?s energy levels are not depleted and you truly benefit from the exercise. Keep your body hydrated at all times, before and after swimming, with lots of water and fruit juice. This is particularly important in summer, with the high humidity in this region, and swimming might make you feel your skin is sufficiently hydrated, whereas you might need more water intake.

When Children Use Dirty Words : Ideas for Women Home and ...

It has happened to all of us. We are out somewhere and for whatever reason our four year old decides to use a four letter word. So what can you do when your child uses a word that they shouldn?t. First and foremost remain calm. Don?t fly ff the handle because kids will pick up on that using that particular word gets you? upset and gets your attention.

Next ask them why they said that word. find out what the the reason behind using that particular word is. Then ask where they heard that word. I hate to say it but nine times out of ten they hear dirty words from parents. we don?t realize we don it sometimes until our children remind us. If your child is old enough to understand explain to them that using words such as those are not polite and that when adults (including you) use them you are being rude.

We tell our children those are grown-up words, not very nice ones but not something that good, politer children should say. If your child is too young to understand the meaning behind those words try to ignore the word all together. It could be they heard the word, repeated, and will never say it again. In the event the word does get used more often then address the issue.

Iran, other Mideast states hit by computer virus

(AP) ? Iran and other Middle East countries have been hit with a cunning computer virus that can eavesdrop on computer users and their co-workers and filch information from nearby cellphones, cybersecurity experts said Tuesday. And suspicion immediately fell on Israel as the culprit.

The Russian Internet security firm Kaspersky Lab ZAO said the "Flame" virus is unprecedented in size and complexity, with researcher Roel Schouwenberg marveling at its versatility.

"It can be used to spy on everything that a user is doing," he said.

Computers in Iran appear to have been particularly affected, and Kaspersky's conclusion that the virus was crafted at the behest of a national government fueled speculation it could be part of an Israeli-backed campaign of electronic sabotage against the Jewish state's archenemy.

The virus can activate a computer's audio systems to listen in on Skype calls or office chatter. It can also take screenshots, log keystrokes and ? in one of its more novel functions? steal data from Bluetooth-enabled cellphones.

Schouwenberg said there is evidence to suggest that the people behind Flame also helped craft Stuxnet, a virus that is believed to have attacked nuclear centrifuges in Iran in 2010. Many suspect Stuxnet was the work of Israeli intelligence.

Tehran has not said whether it lost any data to Flame, but a unit of the Iranian communications and information technology ministry said it has produced an anti-virus capable of identifying and removing Flame from its computers.

Israel's vice premier did little to deflect suspicion about the country's possible involvement in the attack.

"Whoever sees the Iranian threat as a significant threat is likely to take various steps, including these, to hobble it," Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio when asked about Flame. "Israel is blessed with high technology, and we boast tools that open all sorts of opportunities for us."

Researchers not involved in Flame's discovery were more skeptical of its sophistication than Kaspersky, with Richard Bejtlich of Virginia-based Mandiant saying the virus appeared similar to spyware used by the German government to monitor criminal suspects.

"There have been tool like this employed by high-end teams for many years," he said.

Colorado-based Webroot said the virus wasn't as complex or as stealthy as Stuxnet and was "a relatively easy threat to identify."

Flame is unusually large. Malicious programs collected by the British security firm Sophos averaged about 340 kilobytes in 2010, the same year that Kaspersky believes Flame first started spreading. Flame is 20 megabytes ? nearly 60 times that figure.

Alan Woodward, a professor of computing at the University of Surrey in England, said functions can be added or subtracted to the virus depending on what kind of espionage is desired, not unlike the way apps can be downloaded to a smartphone.

He was particularly struck by Flame's ability to turn an infected computer into a kind of "industrial vacuum cleaner," copying data from vulnerable cellphones or other Bluetooth wireless devices left near it.

"I don't believe I've seen it before," he said.

Udi Mokady, chief executive of Cyber-Ark, an Israeli developer of information security, said he believes four countries, in no particular order, have the know-how to develop so sophisticated a weapon: Israel, the U.S., China and Russia.

"It was 20 times more sophisticated than Stuxnet," with thousands of lines of code that took a large team, ample funding and months, if not years, to develop, he said. "It's a live program that communicates back to its master. It asks, 'Where should I go? What should I do now?' It's really almost like a science fiction movie."

It's not clear exactly what the virus was targeting. Kaspersky said it detected the program in hundreds of computers, mainly in Iran but also in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

The company would not give details on the victims except to say that they "range from individuals to certain state-related organizations or educational institutions."

Schouwenberg said stolen data was being sent to some 80 different servers, something that would give the virus' controllers time to adjust their tactics if they were discovered.

As for Flame's purpose, "maybe it's just espionage," he said. "Maybe it's also sabotage."

This training, which combines theoretical and practical experience incurred by teachers who are researchers and professionals, offers a territorial approach to the challenges of the geography of the urban environment, urban management and natural hazards and technology, based on tools and methods of geomatics and legal tools. The peculiarity of this risk management training is to combine teaching methods and tools of geomatics, such as mapping, GIS and qualitative GIS, 3D, remote sensing, database management, data analysis, collaborative mapping, open source software, the web mapping and demographics, to themes of the urban environment, sustainable cities, and natural and technological hazards. This is an introduction to master all these tools to students and teaches them to put them in the service of diagnosis, planning, urban planning and sustainable regional foresight. It is based on association with training for companies in partnership of the University of Cergy-Pontoise and relations with local authorities, consulting firms and government services in Western Paris. Needs in this area is growing, this training enables holders of the master to be able to respond within local authorities, intermunicipal, government services and decentralized government. This dual expertise gained through the master, is also sought by the planning agencies, consulting firms, firms in urban services, as well as research laboratories and private. In M1 The Blog of Berni______ TEACHER EDUCATION and from Paso del Rey, Buenos Aires, Argentina The management of prevention, with indifference the sector to which a company belongs, has always been a need rarely achieved. Multitude of factors have contributed, among which the position of prevention in the scale of priorities of many companies and the lack of resources or models on the market to support this management. This need has always existed, as has always been the need to manage any areas of an organization when they are to achieve an organizational level is important. But in the case of prevention of occupational hazards, the entry into force of Law 31/1995 of November 8, Occupational Hazard Prevention and RD 39/1997, of January 17, Regulations for Prevention Services, subsequently amended by the RD 604/2006 of 19 May, caused a substantial change. Article 2 of Royal Decree 39/1997 of 17 January, and claimed the need to manage the prevention and Article 1 required that, in addition, integrate the prevention of occupational risks in the entire business and the people of the organization. These legal requirements took effect in 1997, but it is true that many companies still have not succeeded, probably because they are still responding to other requirements of the law probably more basic. In any case, the appearance of Law 54/2003 of 12 December, regulatory reform of the Occupational Health and Safety, and Royal Decree 604/2006 of 19 May, has given new impetus to the need manage and integrate the prevention of occupational hazards. Besides the legal requirements, if for any conventional company to manage the prevention is recommended for construction companies is even more so. No one is aware that the difficulties of companies in this sector in the field of prevention are much more important, given the peculiarities of construction: temporary workplaces spread over very large geographic areas, which are highly diversity in their type, are actively involved in the execution of subcontractors and where the presence of potentially dangerous situations is very large. Therefore, implementing management systems for the prevention of occupational hazards in construction companies is very necessary, but by the same characteristics of the sector are also more difficult to implement, a fact that motivates are still few companies have fully operational systems and effective. This paragraph is not intended to provide information other than to facilitate the construction companies to manage the prevention of occupational risks in the works in an integrated and always in accordance with current legislation. To contextualize this effort in the works we will, first, a brief introduction to general aspects of prevention of occupational risks that companies have to manage outside the scope of the work. Finally, with the aim of offering a practical guide to implementation, the preparation of this chapter is based on actual experience Rubau Construction, Inc. in the management of risk prevention in the works, keeping in mind the requirements of the regulations application. Your combination hugely assuming real estate investors elevating assessment price ranges through the entire place, massive unprotected debt tons linked with working and also middle class debtors, as well as an economic development (unnaturally long with the reliance upon plastic-type material) that will lingered merely of sufficient length regarding customers to just ignore systemic challenges merged in order to drive property owners for plastic card debt relief consolidation home loans by using cataclysmic success.

debt consolidation loans

During the time, exploiting this unexpected joys regarding fairness could have appeared one of the most responsible way regarding debtors otherwise vulnerable by way of consistently adding to interest fees in personal loan levels out that will brushed aside just about any coming up debt relief types. The modern strain of cocksure personal loan authorities managing the details regarding government law (in one piece for several years and also totally unprepared in order to counter-top this progressively delicate budgetary gambits) would likely without doubt next that will idea. Each time a sudden and also uncontrolled improvement in an individual convention engenders this demand for a cutting-edge economical assistance, the very first prosper regarding self designed professionals undoubtedly consists of a regrettable talk about regarding hoax performers, and also this only additionally turns transaction alternatives for near desolate property owners. debt consolidation loans

Just like the papers publicized a selection of home loan pros while in the post Y2K boom-let, all of our current country's travails include resulted in an identical marketplace for below respectable owners posing as home finance loan debt relief experts. Balance ballyhooed debt pay out improvements set in place with the United states of america govt and organized through the auspices individuals the majority of influential loaning banks over the past couple of years truthfully seemed to be created to relieve this month to month trouble regarding overcome homeowners, although the contrary consequences ended up being far more widespread. debt consolidation loans

By simply just about any examination, the top of the echelon regarding financial institution executives (the sole people who does actually go to whichever tip regarding profit from either side with the formula) experienced just about every cause in order to impulse a good and also important a reaction to the concerns of patrons all of a sudden outstanding home loan levels out that will rose astronomically as crystal clear consequence of slack underwriting acceptance tips and also home loan officer stratagems. Sadly, whether or not the best steel loved value of this debt relief opportunities for any continuous economical stability of the us, the base sales message did not often be handed down coupled towards the management and business service personnel. Soon, this many distributors and also bill executives utilised by this banking institutions in order to hypothetically even this ultimate settlement regarding pre-existing levels out ended up cheating on this inadequacies of their total leading structure -- far beyond just about any particular levels of incompetency -- and also wrecked consumer dreams more quickly as opposed to the majority of brief sighed bunch regarding greed retailers may have wanted to undertake.

No Android 4.0 Xperia Play: A sad end to the PlayStation Phone

Oh dear. Yesterday we reported that the Sony Xperia Play had seemed to have fallen off the back of the Sony Ice Cream Sandwich wagon. Now Sony?s made the official announcement: the Playstation Phone won?t be joining the Android 4.0 party. Ever. Why not? Read on to find out?

It?s not good news for the old Xperia Play. While a whole ream of other Sony and Sony Ericsson devices are still awaiting their fateful jump into Android 4.0, the Play has failed its initiation.

?In regards to Xperia Play,? begins Sony Mobile?s official blog posting, ?after extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich. ? therefore, we will not make the Android 4.0 upgrade available for Xperia Play.?

Xperia Play review

Ouch. Whilst sales of the Xperia Play were never ground-breaking, this is a real blow to one of Sony?s most interesting handsets.? ?This decision was also verified when we received similar feedback from the developer community; both experienced developers and advanced users,? continues Sony?s statement, referring to the beta rollout of ICS that was issued earlier this year.

?Our priority has and always will be, to provide the best possible user experience on Xperia smartphones. In this instance the ICS upgrade would have compromised stability, where we look to ensure a quality gaming experience with games optimized and developed for Xperia Play.? So where does that leave the Play?

Sony?s Playstation Suite comeback plan

Nowhere good ? as a symbol of where Sony?s intentions lie, it?s not a very positive message about the Android Playstation Suite as a whole. The problem is apparently with gaming, which suggests that there?s some element of Android 4.0 that doesn?t really get on with either the slide-out controls or perhaps some facet of the graphically intensive PS games themselves.

Either way, the ugly duckling of the Sony Ercisson stable is being left out in the cold for good.?Do you have an Xperia Play? What do you make of this news? Let us know below.

Bigfoot Hair Samples Wanted At Oxford University

By: Rob Adams
05/24/2012 10:41 AM ET

Oxford University wants Bigfoot DNA, such as hair samples, in an effort to crack the mystery. They want to find out if Bigfoot (or the Yeti) actually exists as a species, and they are determined to do it through genetics.

Bigfoot Hair Samples

In a project announced this week, Oxford University and Lausanne Museum of Zoology scientists appealed to museums, scientists and yeti aficionados to share samples thought to be from the mythical ape-like creature. Researchers plan to focus on hair to determine the species it originated from.

Bryan Sykes of Oxford University said the group had already received samples to test, including blood, hair, and items supposedly chewed by Bigfoot.

Sykes acknowledged that the chances of proving a new yeti species? existence was low, but ?if we don?t look, we?ll never find out.?

Other experts agreed recent advances made in DNA testing could theoretically solve the Bigfoot question.

?If the Yeti is real and somebody has found bits of their hair, you should be able to tell from the DNA in the hair if this is actually a Yeti,? said Mark Thomas, a professor of evolutionary genetics at University College London. He is not connected to the Bigfoot project.

New genetic tests will be done on just a few strands of hair and should be completed within weeks. Even if the sample is judged to come from an unknown species, scientists should be able to tell how closely it is related to other species, including apes or humans.

In fact, there is already evidence of interbreeding between homo sapiens and Neanderthals.

Switched On: Facebook's ecosystem dilemma

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Image

Despite amassing something close to a billion users, Facebook has mainly stayed true to the startup mantra of staying focused on a few core things. In this case, that has been promoting openness and sharing among friends and, increasingly, the world at large. Such was the case for its rival Google at the launch of the search company's IPO. Since then, however, the company has launched a pair of operating systems powering handsets and tablets around the world, a digital media store selling everything from apps to books, and its own social sharing service (at least twice).

With the vast capital infusion that comes with an IPO, Facebook has an opportunity to expand far beyond its own site and Like buttons that now line up in a row next to sharing buttons using Twitter and Google+. The company certainly has no love for Google and has kept Apple at arm's length, but it has had a strong partnership with Microsoft, which made a financially shrewd $240 million investment in Facebook back in 2007. Windows Phone would be a poorer experience were it not for its tight Facebook integration. The giant social network would gain from entering the device market or spinning its own version of Android as Amazon has done, but there would also be significant challenges to striking out into its own ecosystem.

10 million years to recover from mass extinction

10 million years to recover from mass extinction [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 27-May-2012

It took some 10 million years for Earth to recover from the greatest mass extinction of all time, latest research has revealed.

Life was nearly wiped out 250 million years ago, with only 10 per cent of plants and animals surviving. It is currently much debated how life recovered from this cataclysm, whether quickly or slowly.

Recent evidence for a rapid bounce-back is evaluated in a new review article by Dr Zhong-Qiang Chen, from the China University of Geosciences in Wuhan, and Professor Michael Benton from the University of Bristol. They find that recovery from the crisis lasted some 10 million years, as explained today [27 May] in Nature Geoscience.

There were apparently two reasons for the delay, the sheer intensity of the crisis, and continuing grim conditions on Earth after the first wave of extinction.

The end-Permian crisis, by far the most dramatic biological crisis to affect life on Earth, was triggered by a number of physical environmental shocks - global warming, acid rain, ocean acidification and ocean anoxia. These were enough to kill off 90 per cent of living things on land and in the sea.

Dr Chen said: "It is hard to imagine how so much of life could have been killed, but there is no doubt from some of the fantastic rock sections in China and elsewhere round the world that this was the biggest crisis ever faced by life."

Current research shows that the grim conditions continued in bursts for some five to six million years after the initial crisis, with repeated carbon and oxygen crises, warming and other ill effects.

Some groups of animals on the sea and land did recover quickly and began to rebuild their ecosystems, but they suffered further setbacks. Life had not really recovered in these early phases because permanent ecosystems were not established.

Professor Benton, Professor of Vertebrate Palaeontology at the University of Bristol, said: "Life seemed to be getting back to normal when another crisis hit and set it back again. The carbon crises were repeated many times, and then finally conditions became normal again after five million years or so."

Finally, after the environmental crises ceased to be so severe, more complex ecosystems emerged. In the sea, new groups, such as ancestral crabs and lobsters, as well as the first marine reptiles, came on the scene, and they formed the basis of future modern-style ecosystems.

Professor Benton added: "We often see mass extinctions as entirely negative but in this most devastating case, life did recover, after many millions of years, and new groups emerged. The event had re-set evolution. However, the causes of the killing - global warming, acid rain, ocean acidification - sound eerily familiar to us today. Perhaps we can learn something from these ancient events."

Mont. Regents OK new policy for sexual assaults

(AP) ? The university system moved forward Friday with a new policy for handling sexual assaults in the wake of an investigation at the University of Montana, hoping to ensure that all the state's campuses comply with federal and state gender equity laws.

The U.S. Justice Department earlier this month opened its investigation into the way the university and the city responded to sexual assault and harassment reports, which prompted a second investigation by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights.

The university has come under fire for mishandling rapes over the past two years, particularly in the cases involving football team members. The football coach and athletic director were fired in March, mostly without explanation, but a cloud still hangs over the program.

Emails obtained recently by the Missoulian show that the vice president of the University of Montana, Jim Foley, even sought to punish a student who spoke publicly about how the school was handling her report of being raped. The university also urged the use of the term "date rape" rather than "gang rape" in a case involving allegations of rape against four UM football players.

The university has so far not responded to the details of the emails.

The Board of Regents on Friday morning gave initial approval to a new three-page policy aimed at ensuring such cases are properly handled. It also aims to ensure compliance with the Montana Human Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex.

An early and unanimous committee vote, after just a few minutes' worth of discussion, sent the policy ahead to a second and final vote later in the morning. The new policy requires formalized training for all employees, proper reporting of sexual assaults, and policies aimed at protecting victim confidentiality.

"In light of all the activities lately, this is very important to the board," said regent Major Robinson. "We need to have this in place and make sure there is consistent training taking place at all levels on the campus."

University of Montana President Royce Engstrom spoke briefly, saying the policy and increased interest in such issues represent "some good" that has come from the situation.

"I do want to say how much I do appreciate a system-wide approach to this policy," Engstrom said.

The campuses are directed to appoint a coordinator to ensure compliance with federal Title IX rules and to ensure students and staff are notified of the position, under the policy. The training requires all employees to be aware of the policies and requires advanced training for those likely to field complaints of sexual assault.

"Each complaint filed will be promptly investigated by the campus to determine what occurred," the Montana University System policy reads. "The parties have the right to an adequate, reliable and impartial investigation of complaints, the right to an equal opportunity to present witnesses and other evidence, and the right to the same appeal processes."

The policy indicates that there will be a written conclusion, with notification to parties involved, for each sexual assault or harassment case. University medical workers subservient to other confidentiality laws are exempted from the requirement to report knowledge of sexual assault.

The policy also instructs the new campus Title IX coordinators to assist students who want to lodge sexual assault complaints with local police.

The Montana Chapter of the American Association of University Women has sent a letter to the regents asking the board to take a number of actions, including development of protocols for handling sexual violence cases.

New Approach Could Relieve Ringing Ears

On the evening of his 62nd birthday, Sal Gentile suddenly began hearing a never-ending stream of loud, raucous noises in his ears.

"I was bothered, I was frightened," Gentile recalled of the experience, which began over dinner at a busy restaurant. "It kept me up all night."

Gentile, a retired IBM executive from Florida and a self-described health enthusiast, was an avid cyclist with a busy social life and a rigorous workout routine. He wasn't used to seeing the doctor with a health problem, and he was even less accustomed to an issue like this one, which he said kept him in bed until mid-afternoon. So when Sal's doctor told him that the noise he was hearing was from a condition called tinnitus -- best known for buzzing or ringing in the ears -- all he wanted was a solution.

He was told that tinnitus has no cure -- an answer he said he could not accept. What followed next for Gentile was a 10-month search for a way to cope with the cacophony of hissing, rattling and machine-like sounds constantly playing in his ears. Much to Gentile's frustration, he saw medical specialist after medical specialist including multiple ear doctors and audiologists without an effective solution.

American Tinnitus Association

"I only wish there was a class these doctors had taken to help people with tinnitus and let them know what to do," he said.

Now, for the first time, research suggests an approach that may yield a solution. A new study released Thursday in the journal Lancet offers evidence of an effective treatment for Gentile and the nearly 16 million Americans who have sought medical attention for tinnitus.

"In extreme forms, patients are unable to function, go to work or other social events, and are deprived of enjoyment in life," said the study's primary investigator, Rilana Cima, a clinical psychiatrist at Maastricht University in the Netherlands.

In the study, 247 tinnitus patients received standard therapy, while 245 patients instead received treatment with specialized care involving an integrated multi-disciplinary team of audiologists, psychologists, speech therapists, movement therapists, physical therapists and social workers. What the researchers found was that those patients treated by the multi-disciplinary team had improvements not only in tinnitus symptoms, but also in quality of life.

"The results of this trial are especially convincing and relevant for clinical practice," writes Dr. Berthold Langguth, associate professor of medicine at the University of Regensburg in Germany, in an editorial accompanying the new study.

"Specialized care was significantly better than usual care for the whole sample," continues Langguth. "The researchers did not identify a new treatment -- rather, they identified the most useful treatments."

The new integrated, multi-disciplinary approach outlined in this study includes a combination of a standard tests and medical evaluations in addition to a special type of therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy.

So why is cognitive behavior therapy so helpful?
