?Fruitvale Station? Heartbreaking and Timely | Triangle Arts and ...

Fruitvale Station
From the opening frames of ?Fruitvale Station,? you know you?re in for a film full of dread and heartbreak. Based on the true story of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old African American living in Oakland, Calif., the film begins with video captured by a cell phone on New Year?s Day 2009. The footage shows Grant at the Fruitvale train station, face down on the floor with a Bay Area Transit Police Officer on top of him. The video ends with Grant being shot in the back by the officer. He died later that day.

Winner of the Grand Jury prize at this year?s Sundance Film Festival, ?Fruitvale Station? chronicles Grant?s final 24 hours of life. A convicted felon, Oscar is trying his best to be a good father and a good man. He wants his relationship with his girlfriend Sophina to work, he?s making an effort to be a positive influence on his daughter and he?s trying to get his job at a supermarket deli back, something he?s too proud to admit he?s lost. As the day goes on, we get quiet glimpses of the man Oscar really is; he comforts a dog in its dying moments after being hit-and-run by a car, plays with his daughter after daycare and he jokingly buys a birthday card with white people on it for his sister. Despite his past, Oscar Grant is a good man, and working on getting better.

That?s what makes ?Fruitvale? so unbearably heartbreaking. As Oscar?s life seems to turn a corner for the better, the knowledge of the tragedy to come gives everything leading up to that fateful moment at Fruitvale Station a horrible, grim feeling.

Writer/Director Ryan Coogler, a 26-year-old making his feature-length debut, handles the race relations in ?Fruitvale? with a keen eye, making sure to present things as is, instead of pushing the narrative too far in one direction or another. Shooting with mostly hand-held cameras, Coogler lets the story do the talking for him instead of manipulating the cinematography to manipulate what?s on screen. I?m not sure how close to the facts ?Fruitvale? is regarding Oscar?s final day of life, but as presented, it seems like an honest portrayal of life as an African-American male. When Oscar offers to help a white woman with an order at the deli, she instinctively takes a step back. Instead of being offended, he takes it in stride and helps her anyways, even going so far as to call his grandmother for help. Its just another day in the life for Oscar. Michael B. Jordan, who impressed in ?Friday Night Lights? and ?Chronicle,? is nothing short of electric as Oscar. One second he?s a gentle, loving son to his mother, the very next a ferocious tiger, ready to defend himself at all costs. Its breathtaking to see how fast he goes from one end of the spectrum to another.

?Fruitvale Station? is an important film, taking on even greater relevance given the recent trial of Trayvon Martin in Flordia. A wake-up call to anyone unaware of what its like to be a young African-American male in America, ?Fruitvale? makes it clear everyone deserves a chance to lead a good life regardless of skin color, and how quickly things can come crashing down if people give in to their fears, especially regarding race.

'International beam team' solves Martian meteorite-age puzzle

[unable to retrieve full-text content]By directing energy beams at tiny crystals found in a Martian meteorite, geologists have proven that the most common group of meteorites from Mars is almost four billion years younger than many scientists had believed -- resolving a long-standing puzzle in Martian science and painting a much clearer picture of the Red Planet's evolution that can now be compared to that of habitable Earth.

Facebook Q2: Zuckerberg Delays $1 Million Video Ads That Will Kill TV (FB)

mark zuckerberg

Reuters

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

?

The big question we're hoping Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will answer on his Q2 earnings call is this: When will Facebook fire its broadside at the TV business by finally rolling out the first of its long-planned, not-yet-seen, $1 million video ads?

Our sources tell us that Facebook sales teams are pitching the ad units to big media buying agencies, and have gotten enthusiastic responses. It will happen, we're told.

That means video ads on Facebook are coming to your news feed soon; news of them leaked in April. In an amazing coincidence, the ads will reportedly be 15 seconds long ??the same length as an Instagram video (which Facebook also owns).

They might not arrive anytime soon, however.

"I've talked to some sources who have been pitched directly from Facebook at agencies," says Rob Jewell, CEO of Spruce Media, whose Facebook ad buying clients include Procter & Gamble, Samsung and University of Phoenix. "Agencies also seem really excited about it. I think it's because the problem with online video buying today is that there's really no reach. You can't get that TV-like reach online, and I think that's what has held up those TV dollars from going online. You have to piece it together from lots of video sites with 5 or 10 million users here and there. The size [of Facebook] ?is appealing to agencies."

Counterintuitively, the steep price of the ad unit is precisely what agencies like about it. You can run a big campaign on Facebook for a few thousand dollars, but that's chump change to TV media buyers. They prefer to deal with billions annually. Needle-moving budgets, in other words.

Facebook has repeatedly described its audience size as the equivalent to three Super Bowls happening every day (roughly 300 million people per day). Obviously, the first advertiser into the new format will be a big one, Jewell says: "One of the biggest agencies with one of the largest media buying clients. I know they were very interested but all the plans got pushed back a quarter. I don't even know if it's going to be Q3. I think it might be Q4."

A second source tells us that Facebook video ads were "pulled" and now won't appear until 2014.

Facebook declined comment when reached by Business Insider.

The advent of mass video advertising on Facebook could be a huge threat to television. It's not just the size of Facebook's daily audience that's a threat, it's the analytics, too. Unlike TV,? a Facebook video ad will be able to tell advertisers who saw it, who clicked on it for more, what sales results it spurred, and more. It has partnered with a bunch of Big Data providers who will be able to tell clients exactly how well, or poorly, their ads performed.

TV advertisers, by contrast, mostly just guess at how effective their advertising is.

This is Facebook's big bet, and it ought to terrify broadcast and cable TV sellers: If Facebook offers audiences that are larger than network TV, and with superior ROI analytics, then why would anyone continue spending on TV when they can just run the same ads on Facebook?

Disclosure: The author owns Facebook stock.

10,000 Turtles In Luggage Found And Rescued In India [Video]

In India, 10,000 turtles in luggage carried by two smugglers were spared from a possibly grim fate, uncovered packed in three cases at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International airport in Kolkata.

The two Indian alleged smugglers and their 10,000 turtles in luggage were endangered sea turtles, assistant commissioner of Airport Customs Nabnit Kumar told news sources.

Kumar confirmed the 10,000 turtles? luggage was sitting on a conveyor belt when, for not described reasons, the cases aroused suspicion ? and the animals were discovered crammed into the bags in the thousands:

?10,043 numbers of exotic varieties of the turtles have been seized from two passengers, residents of Chennai, who were coming from China to Singapore, and landed at Kolkata airport.?

The 10,000 turtles smuggled in India are only the latest in what feels like a rash of turtle smuggling incidents, with several other arrests in wide-ranging locales for attempts to illegally transport (and in the process, endangering) threatened sea turtles.

Earlier this month in the US, a man crossing into Canada from Detroit on July 6 using the Ambassador Bridge was found to be smuggling more than 70 turtles, possibly as food or for pet stores, a local source notes.

Ed Grace, deputy director of law enforcement for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, told the outlet that turtle smuggling arrests are ?uncommon, but not rare,? and said:

?It could be a species of turtle that?s located in Madagascar or southeast Asia got smuggled into the United States for a breeder or pet dealer who then sold it to a dealer in Canada? Or the person could have been smuggling them in to be sold at Canadian pet stores.?

Xin Hong Tong, the man arrested in that turtle smuggling incident, faces six months in jail and fines.

This month in Puerto Rico, eight accused turtle smugglers were also arrested following a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service probe into the illegal sea turtle smuggling trade. Many of those incidents involved the sale of turtle meat.

It is not clear why the 10,000 turtles in luggage were being smuggled, or whether they were intended to be sold as meat.

Sci-Fi Legend Arthur C. Clarke's 1986 Predictions for Future Baseball

In 1986, legendary science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke wrote a book that explored what the world might look like in the year 2019. Titled July 20, 2019: Life in the 21st Century, the book has predictions about everything from transportation to sex. But it's his predictions about sports of the future that may raise a few eyebrows for baseball fans here in the year 2013. Bionic shoulders, 57-year-old third basemen, and open steroid use? Just a regular day for Major League Baseball in the year 2019, according to Clarke.

Skipping breakfast may increase coronary heart disease risk

[unable to retrieve full-text content]A large 16-year study finds men who reported that they skipped breakfast had higher risk of heart attack or death from coronary heart disease. The timing of meals, whether it?s missing a meal in the morning or eating a meal very late at night, may cause adverse metabolic effects that lead to coronary heart disease. Even after accounting for modest differences in diet, physical activity, smoking and other lifestyle factors, the association between skipping breakfast (or eating very late at night) and coronary heart disease persisted.

How To Get Going At DIY Home Improvements | Swimming Pool ...

If you are an independent person, you may want to fix up your home. You may also want to learn news things that can help you better your skills. This article will show you some helpful tips for doing your own home improvement.

You might have to repaint your porch. It is important that you do not scrimp on quality when purchasing this exterior paint. It?s important that you select paint that has the same base. For example, you want to use oil paint over oil-based paint or latex paint (water) over paint with a water base. It?s best to use oil-based paints for trim, since it?s more durable. It should not, however, be used on decks or other outdoor flooring, as it tends to become very slippery when it snows.

Bathrooms should always have a ventilation fan or a window. You do not want to get stuck with unnecessary mold growth due to the humidity from the hot showers. Painting your walls repeatedly will not get rid of mold. Try using preventative measures to keep it from growing. Add a window or some type of ventilation in order to cut down the humidity.

It is a good idea to do home improvements soon after you notice there is an issue. It?s too easy to forget about all the little things that needs fixing. Avoid doing this. It is amazing how quickly damage spreads. Small problems can quickly blow up into a big one.

Don?t start painting your home?s interior until you?ve taken a damp cloth and wiped away any extra dust, dirt, or oil from the baseboards and walls. The paint will stick better, and you may not have to repaint or touch up too often by undertaking this preparation work.

With the advice from this article, you can do home improvements smarter and easier than ever before. Soon you?ll be moving faster and making even more difficult improvements that will make your home better in every way; it will be more beautiful, more livable, more energy efficient, or more organized, whatever you need most.

Google CEO Larry Page this week revealed that more than 1.5 million Android devices are being activated each day, up from 1.3 million last September. The company previously announced that there were more than 900 million Android devices worldwide, which the executive said is ?pretty amazing given the first Android phone launched less than five years ago.? Google?s app marketplace has also seen unprecedented growth and Page revealed that over 50 billion apps have been downloaded from Google Play, or double the?25 billion apps the company reported last September. Google is expected to pass Apple?s App Store, which reached the same milestone in May, in total app downloads later this year or early next year. The executive also noted that even though it is only four years old, there are now more than 750 million Chrome users worldwide. Google disappointed Wall Street with its second-quarter results, however, reporting earnings of?$ 9.56 per share on revenues of $ 14.11 billion.

Israel's deepest well targets 1.5B barrels of crude

(Bloomberg Businessweek) The deepest oil well drilled in Israel?s 65-year history may be the most important.

Houston?s Noble Energy Inc. (NBL:US) will probe 6,500 meters (4 miles) below the Mediterranean seabed later this year, targeting as much as 1.5 billion barrels of crude, equal to about 15 years of Israeli demand.

While explorers have found enough natural gas in the past five years to turn Israel into an exporter, a major oil discovery would break new ground. The Middle East?s third-largest economy spends about $10 billion a year importing 98 percent of the oil it uses. Domestic production would increase tax revenue, boost the country?s balance of payments and reduce vulnerability to supply disruptions.

Pakistan Christian girl accused of blasphemy moves to Canada over security fears

ISLAMABAD - A Christian girl who was accused of burning Islam's holy book in a case that focused international attention on Pakistan's harsh blasphemy laws was forced to move to Canada over security concerns, her lawyer said Saturday

Tahir Naveed Chaudhry said the girl left Pakistan with her parents, three sisters and a brother on March 14.

A Muslim cleric who lobbied for her release, Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi, said the girl had been facing threats and was moving constantly.

"I am sad that this innocent girl had to leave Pakistan. She had been acquitted by the court, and despite that it was not possible for her to live freely," he said.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney told CTV News that he personally intervened to help Rimsha Masih.

He called her case ??an extraordinary example of brutal persecution.?

Due to safety concerns, the family?s exact whereabouts in Canada are being kept secret.

The girl was arrested in August in Islamabad after a Muslim cleric accused her of burning the Qur?an.

The cleric was later accused of fabricating evidence, and the girl was acquitted.

The case received attention in part because of her young age and questions about her mental abilities.

An official medical report at the time put her age at 14 although some of her supporters said she was as young as 11.

The medical report also said her mental state did not correspond with her age.

Even though the case against her was thrown out, people accused of blasphemy in Pakistan are often subject to vigilante justice.

Mobs have been known to attack and kill people accused of blasphemy, and two prominent politicians who have discussed changes to the blasphemy laws have been killed.
