You Want My Support? How Much Are You Offering?

Judge A.Z. Blair.

Judge A.Z. Blair

Records of the Redpath Chautauqua Bureau, University of Iowa Libraries, Iowa City, Iowa.

Defenders of democracy and proponents of free, fair elections have plenty to fret about in Ohio?the possibility of voting machine conspiracies, the impact of unrelenting super PAC-funded advertising, and cable-company partisanship, among other things. It?s serious stuff, perhaps even serious enough to affect the outcome of the 2012 presidential election.?But Ohio?s modern-era electoral gamesmanship has nothing on the Buckeye State?s voting shenanigans of yesteryear. Unless the residents of Cuyahoga County have engaged in secret compacts to trade their votes for iPad minis, or Franklin County voters agree to cast their ballots for the candidate most willing to secure them tickets for the big Michigan game at the Horseshoe on Nov. 24, the century-old violations of Adams County will continue to set the bar when it comes to election fixing in Ohio.

Modern-day Adams County, which borders Kentucky and is located less than 70 miles southeast of Cincinnati, is a favorite of outdoorsmen, who flock to Ohio Brush Creek for some of the area?s best smallmouth bass fishing. Crafters, meanwhile, tend to visit the area to partake in the quilt barn auto tour. But in the early 1900s, this sleepy rural region found itself in the midst of a full-fledged crisis.

?The air in Adams County is clean and bracing,? the New York Times Sunday Magazine reported in a Jan. 15, 1911, story. ?The stars shine larger there in the frosty [w]inter nights than they do in the cities. Men live close to the soil. It seems like a place set apart for the good things in life, but it is the rottenest borough in the civilized world.?

Adams County, around the onset of the 20th century, was one of the nation?s foremost hotbeds of vote boodling?the practice of buying and selling votes for political office. The story of just how bad things got in Adams County, and of how one man, Judge A.Z. Blair, endeavored to set things right, have largely been lost to history but are discomfortingly pertinent to our own electoral moment, even if it?s less common to buy and sell votes quite so boldly nowadays.

According to a 1911 article in McClure?s Magazine written by Judge Blair, elections in Adams County were virtually boodler-free prior to the Civil War?largely because nearly everyone who lived there voted along the Democratic Party line. But when soldiers returned home after fighting on the Union side, hundreds of them had become loyal to the Republican Party, and Blair noted that by 1867, when Republican Rutherford B. Hayes ran for governor of Ohio, the practice of vote buying had begun to infiltrate the county. For the next decade or so, the purchasing of votes was at least somewhat discreet?with candidates and party loyalists providing willing vote sellers, mostly poor farm workers and others of modest means, a dollar or two for each vote.

Gradually, both political parties became more aggressive in their vote-buying efforts, much to the delight of county residents. In 1879, according to a 1911 edition of Cosmopolitan Magazine (not the same publication we?ve come to know as Cosmo), a Republican candidate for governor ?sent two-dollar bills into Adams County? to fund vote-buying operations. Not to be outdone, Democratic partisans from the nation?s capital journeyed to Adams County in 1886 with ?stacks of ten-dollar gold pieces? in an attempt to secure the county for their party. No longer was it just poor farmhands exchanging their votes for cash. ?Thirty thousand dollars was spent to carry Adams County Democratic that year,? according to the Times Sunday Magazine, and, from there, things snowballed. ?Prices went higher and higher with each succeeding election,? the Cosmopolitan report noted, ?until twenty-five dollars [per vote] was the average.? (In 2012 dollars, that amount would equate to approximately $640.) Campaign managers oversaw gigantic slush funds, and nearly all men of voting age in the county, regardless of upbringing or occupation, dipped into the bag at election time.

?Men who had moved into other parts of the [s]tate,? Blair wrote in McClure?s, ?kept their residence in Adams County for years, so as to come back at election time ... to sell their vote.? Even those who were barred from voting managed to get in on the action. ?[W]omen are numbered among the boodlers who have made the rest of the country look aghast at the cesspool of corruption that has opened here,? noted the Times. ?Mothers have sold the votes of sons and husbands, sisters have bartered away the suffrage of their brothers and fathers, and even sweethearts have put up for auction the votes of their swains.?

And no one, it seems, attempted to keep up appearances of propriety?despite the fact that the state of Ohio passed a law in the late 1880s making it illegal to compensate citizens for their votes. (Current federal law, as well as those of every state, expressly bans the practice of buying and selling votes.) Blair recalled in McClure?s the time when precinct leaders auctioned off a voter, ?like a horse or a hog,? in front of a crowd at the courthouse in West Union (the county?s seat of government) that included the town?s mayor, the county sheriff, and the prosecuting attorney.

Buyers would approach a potential vote seller, go to the polling place with him to watch him submit his ballot, then pay the agreed upon fee. When the county implemented a somewhat secret ballot process in 1890 that required voters to mark and submit uniform ballot sheets listing all candidates, party leaders quickly discovered a way to beat the new system and effectively ?check the work? of their boodlers. ?The voter was told to place his ballot over a large envelope which was given to him while marking it,? the Times reported. ?Inside of it was a sheet of carbon paper over a fac-simile of the official ballot. The marking of the ballot marked the duplicate, so that the purchase could be checked.?

An attempt to stop the buying and selling of votes in the 1890s via mutually agreed upon assurances from both parties worked wonders ... for one election. Thereafter, candidates and residents went right back to their boodling ways. ?These people down here, many of them,? Blair told the Times in 1911, ?do not realize they are doing wrong when they sell their votes. It is a custom. They won?t go to the polls unless they are paid.? (Indeed, even Blair admitted to engaging in the practice during his younger days.) Around the time of the 1910 elections in Adams County, Blair, who was then serving as a common pleas judge for Adams and four neighboring counties, helped spearhead an investigation uncovering that 85 percent of voters in an average precinct had, at one time or another, bought or sold votes. By that point, he?d seen enough.

Outages, floods hit two N.J. refineries; others restart

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The second-largest refinery on the U.S. East Coast suffered some flooding and a power outage from Hurricane Sandy, and two smaller plants also lost power, as glitches threatened to slow the recovery in fuel supplies disrupted by the massive storm.

While the region's biggest plant, in Philadelphia, and several others were ramping up operations after escaping damage, other facilities, pipelines and terminals were struggling to restore the flow of supplies that had slowed to a trickle.

Phillips 66 said there was "some flooding in low-lying areas" of its 238,000 barrel-per-day Bayway, New Jersey, plant, which was shut on Monday as a precaution. The plant remains closed, the company said, and utility PSE&G said power was likely to be restored no sooner than in 24 to 48 hours.

News of trouble at Bayway, nicknamed the "gasoline machine" for its key role in supplying motor fuel to the New York City area, pared losses in gasoline futures which had fallen more than 2 percent as output recovered elsewhere and traders bet that fuel consumption would be hit.

RBOB futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), which was due to reopen its trading floor on Wednesday, closed down 1 percent, their first loss in three days. By late afternoon they had erased losses and turned higher.

Other power-related glitches also surfaced after the storm, which left more than 8 million customers without electricity, shut seven major regional airports and all but halted traffic on the nation's most heavily traveled roads.

As the storm moved north, a power outage shut Imperial Oil's 121,000-bpd Sarnia, Ontario, refinery, but the company said it expected to restart units later in the day.

Hess Corp's 70,000-bpd Port Reading, New Jersey, refinery, which had also shut ahead of Sandy, lost power and had no time frame for restarting.

The northern Line 3 segment of the Colonial Pipeline, a conduit that supplies as much as 15 percent of the East Coast's 5.2 million bpd of gasoline, diesel and fuel demand, was still idle, but the company said it had not suffered any operational damage. Portable generators were being brought in to restore power to the Linden tank farm and resume shipments.

The company asked customers to divert fuel shipments bound for the New Jersey area to southern markets.

The flooding at Bayway, which had been seen by experts as the refinery most vulnerable to Sandy's record 13-foot (4-meter) storm surge and subsequent power outages, is a potential second nightmare for Phillips 66, which had struggled to restore its Alliance, Louisiana, refinery after Hurricane Isaac in August. That storm pushed more than 2 feet of floodwater into the plant.

PHILLY PLANTS SEEN OK

Operations in the Philadelphia area appeared set to resume quickly. Philadelphia Energy Solutions' 330,000-bpd refinery, the biggest in the region, escaped damage and was restoring operations at the Point Breeze half of the plant that was shut, the company said, confirming a Reuters report.

Industry group Genscape said its infrared cameras detected the restart of key crude and vacuum distillation units.

Delta Air Lines subsidiary Monroe Energy's 185,000-bpd Trainer, Pennsylvania, plant operated through the storm, and was expected to reach full rates next week after a maintenance overhaul, a source with knowledge of operations said.

PBF Energy was ramping up its Delaware City refinery after minimal run-cuts, another such source said. A company spokesman confirmed reports that the plant had flared briefly, but said the incident had not affected operations.

Delaware City and PBF's 180,000-bpd Paulsboro plant in southern New Jersey, which had throttled back to reduced rates ahead of Sandy, "ran well through the storm", spokesman Michael Karlovich said.

He said personnel had completed a "thorough assessment" of the facilities, and that PBF would not provide further updates on logistics or operations.

The precautionary refinery closures were more widespread than during Hurricane Irene in August 2011, when only the Bayway plant shut completely.

John Auers, senior vice president and refining specialist at Turner, Mason & Co in Dallas, said East Coast plants, even those near the water, are better protected from potential flood damage than those that suffered weeks-long outages on the Gulf Coast following hurricanes Katrina and Rita seven years ago.

Still, even minor flooding can be a concern and plants without sufficient on-site generators may have to wait for utilities to restore outside power. The largest risk may simply lie in restarting vast, intense equipment.

"You're talking about heating up oil to fairly high temperatures, putting it through processing units at high pressure," Auers said. "Anytime you interrupt that steady-state there is always the potential for issues."

The vast network of terminals and smaller pipelines that serves the region - seen as a potentially greater danger than refinery outages - was also being assessed.

NuStar Energy said it could not access its Linden, New Jersey, terminal, while Magellan Midstream Partners said it would resume loading at two truck racks in Delaware and Connecticut later in the day. Motiva was reopening terminals apart from those in New Jersey and New York which were flooded and those in Connecticut which had lost power.

Major ports that supply the area with some 1 million bpd of imported fuel were starting to reopen. The Port of Boston opened without restrictions and was expected to unload a gasoline cargo later on Tuesday, an official said.

DEMAND IN FOCUS

Barring major damage, most experts expected the region's fuel supplies could bounce back quickly, while demand was likely to take a much deeper knock. Some 170,000 bpd of jet fuel demand alone was shut for a third day as all three major New York area airports remained shut, with no date for resuming flights.

Benchmark New York gasoline futures prices, which rallied more than 6 percent before the storm as traders feared a disruption in supplies, were still down 1 percent or 3 cents on Tuesday as the focus shifted to the likely cut in fuel consumption due to grounded flights and empty roads. U.S. crude oil futures rose slightly, reversing Monday's dip.

One trader offering to sell physical cargoes in the New York Harbor market found no buyers on Monday.

"For the moment you have a big black hole where there used to be oil demand," said Credit Suisse oil analyst Jan Stuart. He said 80 percent of demand in the New York metropolitan area had been affected somehow.

"In the end, the demand deficit outweighs the supply deficit."

Airlines had canceled more than 15,770 flights in the past four days, flight-tracking service FlightAware said.

(AP) ? Eli Manning stood on the New York Giants' sideline in disbelief when it looked as if the Dallas Cowboys had scored a go-ahead touchdown with 10 seconds left.

What was encouraging is what he didn't see: a replay on the giant videoboard that hangs above the field at Cowboys Stadium, where the Giants still have never lost following a wild 29-24 victory Sunday.

Officials reviewed and overturned Dez Bryant's apparent 37-yard touchdown catch, ruling his hand hit out of bounds, and the Cowboys couldn't get into the end zone after the overturned reception.

"I couldn't quite believe they were able to hit a touchdown in that situation. I kind of kept looking for the replay," Manning said. "You know the game was not going to be over until that clock hit zero."

This was the 20th time in Manning's career that the Giants rallied in the fourth quarter to win. And this comeback came after New York blew an early 23-0 lead.

"It speaks about our resiliency. We know how to win these games," receiver Victor Cruz said. "We've been in a bunch of them."

After their sixth win in seven games since a season-opening home loss to Dallas, the Giants (6-2) hurriedly cleared out of Cowboys Stadium trying to get home as quickly as possible with Hurricane Sandy bearing down on the East Coast.

The Giants are 4-0 in Arlington since Jerry Jones' football palace opened in 2009 with a New York victory.

"I'm very disappointed right now," Jones said. "I thought after all that, our defense played well enough, our offense kept going and I thought we were going to get a chance to pull one out."

Coupled with Sunday losses by Philadelphia (3-4) and Washington (3-5), the Giants strengthened their hold on the NFC East lead halfway through their schedule.

New York led 23-0 just 2 minutes into the second quarter when defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul returned an interception 28 yards for a touchdown. That was the third of four interceptions thrown by Tony Romo, and Dallas (3-4) finished with six turnovers.

But the Giants didn't score again until Lawrence Tynes made a 43-yard field goal with 10:20 left for a 26-24 lead. He kicked a 37-yarder with 3? minutes remaining in the fourth for his fifth of the game.

Stevie Brown set up Tynes' last field goal with a fumble recovery and also had two interceptions.

"We have good leadership, good people," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "They're fighters in that locker room. ... Sometimes it comes out differently than it was designed."

Dallas got to the Giants 19 on one of its last drives. On fourth-and-1 with 1:03 left, Romo scrambled and was picked off by Brown.

After New York failed to get a first down on three running plays and Dallas used all three of its timeouts, the Cowboys got the ball back with 44 seconds left at the 30. They got to the Giants 37 before Bryant's catch between two defenders in the back of the end zone was overturned.

"We scratched and scraped," Giants defensive lineman Chris Canty said. "At the end, we still had to have a little luck to pull that one out."

Manning completed 15 of 29 passes for 192 yards with an interception.

Romo threw for a career-high 437 yards while completing 36 of 62 passes. Jason Witten broke his own Cowboys team record with 18 catches, which resulted in 167 yards. Miles Austin had nine catches for 133 yards and Bryant had five catches for 110 yards.

The Giants led 13-0 in the first quarter after Romo's first two interceptions.

Brown, who has five interceptions in six games, stepped in front of Bryant and had a 37-yard return to set up Tynes' 37-yard kick that made it 6-0. Three plays later, Corey Webster's 37-yard interception return led to Andre Brown's 1-yard TD.

Michael Coe recovered at the Dallas 15 when Bryant fumbled after fielding a punt over his head, setting up a 26-yard field goal.

Three plays later, Pierre-Paul broke off a block and jumped to grab the ball. He punctuated his first-ever pick and touchdown by dunking the ball over the crossbar.

Things were so bad then that Jones was booed when he came on the videoboard during a public service announcement about breast cancer awareness. On another unrelated video during that same timeout, coach Jason Garrett got the same treatment when his image appeared on the screen.

"I've been to boo school so to speak," Jones said. "Seriously. I'm sure the fans had the same feeling I did. I was frustrated, mad and knew that we had dug ourselves a hole that was going to take super effort to get out of."

Dallas scored the last 10 points of the half, then added two more touchdowns in the third quarter to go ahead. Romo faked a handoff and rolled right for a 1-yard score on fourth down, ending the play with an emphatic spike.

After the Giants went three-and-out, the Cowboys drove to the 1 again. Romo faked another handoff and started rolling right, when he then shuffled the ball ahead to John Phillips for a 1-yard pass that put Dallas up 24-23.

None of that mattered after the closing sequence.

"Just tough when you think you've won the game," Romo said. "It switches as that moment. You put a lot into it, obviously. We put a week's worth (of emotion) in that one game.

NOTES: The only Cowboys with more passing yards in a game are Don Meredith (460 in November 1963) and Troy Aikman (455 in November 1998). ... The only other time Dallas had three 100-yard receivers was Nov. 10, 1963, at San Francisco. ... Tynes is now the second-leading scorer in Giants history. His 17 points Sunday pushed his career total to 535 (113 field goals, 196 extra points). He passed Brad Daluiso's 526 points. The career leader is Pete Gogolak's 646.

San Francisco has taken the lead in the second inning for the second consecutive night.

Hunter Pence hit a ground-rule double to left-center with one out and Brandon Belt followed with a triple deep into the right-field corner.

Knowing how much trouble his team has had scoring runs, Tigers manager Jim Leyland brought the infield in and that decision saved a run when Gregor Blanco grounded out to second base. Belt held at third.

Ryan Theriot flied out to end the inning. Giants 1, Tigers 0.

Theriot is the DH for the first time in his career.

___

The temperature at first pitch was 44 degrees, with a stiff wind making it feel even colder.

Once again, runs could be hard to come by.

___

Believe it or not, the World Series could end tonight.

Seems as though it just started.

San Francisco ace Matt Cain will be on the mound at chilly Comerica Park as the Giants go for a four-game sweep of Detroit and their second championship in three years. First pitch coming up at 8:15 p.m. EDT.

Cain has already pitched a pair of clinchers in this postseason, earning the win in Game 5 of the division series against Cincinnati and Game 7 of the NLCS against St. Louis. A victory tonight would mark the perfect finish for Cain ? who pitched a perfect game in June against Houston.

Max Scherzer gets the ball for the slumping Tigers, who are hitting .165 in the Series after getting shut out in each of the past two games.

The only major league team to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the postseason was the 2004 Boston Red Sox, who rallied past the rival New York Yankees in the AL championship series.

Take nothing away from the Giants' pitchers, who have certainly been sublime. But let's be honest, unless Detroit can mount a major comeback, this Series will go down as a dud.

Rights group: Muslim area of Myanmar city destroyed

Soe Zeya Tun / Reuters

A girl joins others collecting pieces of metal from the rubble in a neighborhood in Pauktaw township that was burned in recent violence October 27, 2012.

By Reuters

SITTWE, Myanmar - A human rights group expressed concern for the safety of thousands of Muslims on Saturday after revealing satellite images of a once-thriving coastal community reduced to ashes during a week of violence in western Myanmar.

The images released by the New York-based Human Rights Watch show "near total destruction" of a predominantly Rohingya Muslim part of Kyaukpyu, one of several areas in Rakhine state where battles between Rohingyas and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists threaten to derail the former Burma's fragile democratic transition.

More than 811 buildings and houseboats were razed in Kyaukpyu on Oct. 24, forcing many Rohingya to flee north by sea toward the state capital Sittwe, Human Rights Watch said.

"Burma's [Myanmar?s] government urgently needs to provide security for the Rohingya in Arakan (Rakhine) State, who are under vicious attack," Phil Robertson, the group's deputy Asia director, said.

There were widespread unconfirmed reports of boatloads of Rohingyas trying to cross the sea border to neighboring Bangladesh, which has denied them refugee status since 1992.

No food, no water
Rohingyas in dozens of packed boats with no food or water that have fled Kyaukpyu -- an industrial zone important to China -- and other recent hotspots were seeking access on Friday to overcrowded refugee camps around the state capital Sittwe, according to four Rohingya refugee sources.

Some boats were blocked by security forces from reaching the shore and few Rohingyas managed to reach the camps, the sources said by telephone.

A crew from Britain's Channel 4 News gains access to resettlement camps set-up for around 60,000 members of the Muslim minority group months after deadly clashes with local Buddhists forced them from their homes.

Wan-lark foundation, an organization that has been assisting Rakhine Buddhist refugees, said no clashes in the state had been reported to them since Friday night, but dead bodies of Rakhines had been found.

"Around 6pm last night in Kyawtyaw, the bodies of 16 Rakhines were found in the sea. They had died during the attacks on Thursday. We're looking for more bodies," representative Tun Mein Thein said on Saturday.

The chaos suggests the reformist government is struggling to contain historic ethnic and religious tensions suppressed during nearly a half century of military rule that ended last year.

Myanmar government ends direct media censorship

A Rakhine government spokesman put the death toll at 112 as of Friday. But within hours state media revised it to 67 killed from Oct. 21 to 25, with 95 wounded and nearly 3,000 houses destroyed.

The death toll could be far higher, said Human Rights Watch, citing "allegations from witnesses fleeing scenes of carnage and the government's well-documented history of underestimating figures that might lead to criticism of the state."

The clashes come just five months after communal unrest killed more than 80 people and displaced at least 75,000 in the same region.

Soe Zeya Tun / Reuters

Hla Hla Myint, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head in recent violence, rests in a bed at a hospital in Kyuktaw township, Myanmar, Thursday.

'Ethnic cleansing'
A boat carrying 120 Muslims from Kyaukpyu was intercepted by Rakhines, who killed the men and raped the women, the advocacy group Burmese Rohingya Organisation U.K. claimed in a statement. This report could not be verified, Reuters said.

"Ethnic cleansing is happening under the noses of the international community and they are doing nothing," said Tun Khin, the group's president. "We have confirmed reports that hundreds of people have been killed and the government must be aware of that."

Ease sanctions on Myanmar, Democracy leader Suu Kyi says on US tour

Kyaukpyu is crucial to China's most strategic investment in Myanmar: Twin pipelines that will carry oil and natural gas through the town on the Bay of Bengal to China's energy-hungry western provinces.

The United Nations has warned that Myanmar's fledgling democracy could be "irreparably damaged" by the violence.

Rohingyas are officially stateless. Buddhist-majority Myanmar's government regards the estimated 800,000 Rohingyas in the country as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, and not as one of the country's 135 official ethnic groups, and denies them citizenship.

But many of those expelled from Kyaukpyu are not Rohingya but Muslims from the officially recognized Kaman minority, said Chris Lewa, director of the Rohingya advocacy group, Arakan Project. "It's not just anti-Rohingya violence anymore, it's anti-Muslim," she said.

It was unclear what set off the latest arson and killing that started on Sunday. In June, tension flared after the rape and murder of a Buddhist woman that was blamed on Muslims, but there was no obvious spark this time.

Rights groups such as Amnesty International have called on Myanmar to amend or repeal a 1982 citizenship law to end the Rohingyas' stateless condition.

Detroit Tigers Hope Return To Comerica Park Will Turn Around World Series

DETROIT -- Toting his tiny aluminum bat, 5-year-old Gage Brookens wandered toward the cage and watched Austin Jackson, Omar Infante and a few other Tigers take batting practice on a chilly afternoon at Comerica Park.

Maybe that's what these slumping Detroit hitters need in this World Series. Metal bats, rather than their weak wood.

"Oh, I don't know if they'd allow that," kidded Gage's grandpop, Tigers first base coach Tom Brookens. "But the hitters definitely wouldn't mind."

Something better change for Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and the Tigers real soon or their year is going to end real shortly. They totaled only three runs and 10 hits in San Francisco while falling into a 2-0 deficit against the Giants.

Game 3 is Saturday night, with Anibal Sanchez starting for Detroit against Ryan Vogelsong.

The Tigers are hoping that a switch in scenery ? the ivy hanging on the center-field backdrop at Comerica has turned to autumn colors since the AL championship series ? and a flip in pitchers might help.

Throttled by left-handed starters Barry Zito and Madison Bumgarner at AT&T Park, the Tigers are eager to see a right-hander. Any right-hander, in fact: Detroit batted .275 against righties, .253 vs. lefties.

"Sometimes you can't explain it," Tigers catcher Alex Avila said before a workout Friday. "In our case, we've had trouble all year with left-handed pitching, which is strange because we have a lot of good hitters on the team."

"It'll be a nice change, obviously, to face a right-hander because we've had more success."

The Tigers will see Vogelsong, followed by fellow right-hander Matt Cain in Game 4.

"We've gone through spurts this whole season where we've thrown the ball like this as a staff," Vogelsong said. "We obviously had our downtime there in the middle of September and at the end of August."

"And we're just all kind of hitting our stride here at the same time. It's up to me and Matt now to keep it going over here in Detroit."

Tigers manager Jim Leyland plans to insert speedy rookie Quintin Berry and Andy Dirks in his outfield.

A few big hits would certainly energize the Tigers. So might a few breaks, they believe.

"The ball just hasn't rolled our way yet," Berry said. "They got a hit off the third-base bag. They had a bunt that wouldn't go foul. They made great catches in left field.

"But no excuses. We're back at home, this is our chance."

No mistaking that the Series has shifted from California to Michigan.

In San Francisco, it was downright balmy in the 60s, and made for a pair of picture-perfect settings to play ball.

At Comerica, it was in the mid-40s and the lights were turned on while the Tigers worked out. The forecast was for Game 3 was for temperatures to drop into the upper 30s in the later innings.

"We have got heaters in the dugout for both teams, obviously. Ours is going to be a little warmer than theirs, I think, tomorrow night," Leyland said. "But that's all right. We're not going to tell them that. I'm just kidding."

"You know what? It's cold, but I mean this is the World Series. It's cold for everybody. It's cold for the fans, the beer is cold, everything is cold. It's great. Enjoy it."

While the Tigers have lost five straight World Series games dating to 2006 against St. Louis, they've also won five postseason home games in a row. Detroit began that string last year in the ALCS, took two against Oakland this year in the division series and then finished off an ALCS sweep of the Yankees.

Overall, the Tigers have taken eight straight at home.

"I think a lot of teams, your really good teams, they dominate at home. That's what they do ? the Cardinals, the Reds, they were really tough at home," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

"We ended up having a pretty good home record, despite having some struggles there in September or late August. But it's a team that feeds on probably their home crowd, and they're more comfortable at home, and that's usually the case in baseball. But this certainly is a club that we know is playing very well here."

100% How to Survive a Plague

A beautifully compiled, emotionally engaging look at the activist fight against AIDS during the darkest of days, primarily the late 80s/early 90s. As someone who was there in the trenches as a member of ACT UP and a Treatment Advocate for AIDS Project Los Angeles, there is no disputing the accuracy of what's on display here. What's surprising is how well Director David France allows the archival footage to do the lion's share of the work with very little talking heads interference. BUT, when the narration does kick in, especially late in this film, it's an astonishing punch to the gut. For those who survived, there's a tremendous sense of sacrifice and loss, and it's conveyed with pure, unfiltered, raw emotion. Try watching Peter Staley, Spencer Cox, Mark Harrington, and Larry Kramer and not feel every moment of their struggles. We watch as ordinary citizens put themselves front and center into an extraordinary fight with a monolith, the U.S. Government's Health Programs. It's a war in which activists almost single-handedly, and by sheer will and impressive smarts, forced the speeding up of the drug approval process. The constant street actions, civil disobedience, and a unified message embarrassed the bureaucracies and got potentially life-saving medications in the hands of people who desperately needed them. It's one of the most remarkable accomplishments I've witnessed in my lifetime and I am so proud to have been a small part of it. We experience this film directly from a small group of people who formed a Think Tank and never thought they would live long enough to enjoy the fruits of their labor. This is powerful, essential viewing and a blistering reminder that ordinary people can make a difference.
