Microsoft's Wedge Touch Mouse has sculpted sizzle

8 hrs.

As Microsoft gets ready to release tablet-oriented Windows 8, it's also getting some nifty hardware in place to work with the new OS, due out Oct. 26. Among the mice and keyboards is the pocket-sized Wedge Touch Mouse ($69.95), with a minimalist design that is almost Apple-like.

At 2.39 inches?by?2.11 inches, the Wedge Touch Mouse?has four-way touch scrolling and navigation. It also uses Bluetooth, so no cables or?extra USB?dongles are required to connect. It also has "BlueTrack Technology," so that the mouse can be used on just about any surface.

This mouse is?also mindful of?energy. "If you?forget to turn it off, it?ll shut down or go into sleep mode with the computer it?s connected to instead of draining the battery," says Microsoft.

The Wedge Touch Mouse will have some siblings, including the Wedge Mobile Keyboard?(above), Sculpt Touch Mouse and Sculpt Mobile Keyboard.?You can read about them?here.?

Also, Microsoft's existing?Touch Mouse ($79.95)?gets a tweak with a new version that handles gestures optimized for Windows 8 navigation, including?horizontal scrolling.

Thread: Maple leaf inlay on workbench top. - Family Woodworking

Some of you will remember that i have posted somewhere that i wanted to inlay some bling on my workbench.

Well this has been on the to do list for some time and so i finallly got er done.

Here is how it came out after try number 2.

Used all sorts of tools to get it this close. Its not perfect, but will do for bench bling.

The wood is bloodwood and i made the inlay around 4 millimeters thick.

After glueing it in i decided to clean up my benchtop to flatten the whole lot together again,. what with working on all sorts on that bench it needed a clean up.

Then i finally got another thing done and tried it out. I been meaning to finish off adding my deadman, only two pieces of wood to add but its taken me years to get er done.

Sure makes a difference, i can see now where a leg vise can play a role and good place for hold down storage.

Never got a shot of it but also secured the wooden cross bars for the bottom shelf. They have been lying loose for a few years while i decided if they were going to stay or not. Guess the decision was made.

So my bench is finally finished at least for now.

Spanish recession deepens in second quarter

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain slid deeper into recession in the second quarter as a tough new round of austerity to head off the budget crisis that threatens the euro took effect both on overall demand and the price consumers have to pay for goods.

The first official numbers on gross domestic product showed the economy shrank 0.4 percent from the previous quarter after contracting 0.3 percent in the first three months of the year. The economy was 1.0 percent smaller than a year earlier.

Consumer prices according to both Spanish and EU methodology rose 2.2 percent year-on-year, with the EU-harmonized increase above forecasts being due to medicine price hikes put in place by the government to save money and deflate the deficit.

Economists warned price hikes, and especially a 3-point rise in value-added tax due to come into effect in September, would distort consumer prices while the deepening recession reflected slower domestic demand.

That will further weaken the government's efforts to get the economy growing again - vital if it is to meet targets on reducing its budget shortfall and halting a market-inspired crisis in how it finances its debt.

"To properly follow Spain's economic reality, I would look at domestic service inflation, which is where we'll see stagnation and even deflationary pressures. Consumption remains very weak," economist at Madrid-based broker Intermoney Jose Carlos Diez said.

Spain slipped into the second recession since 2009 in the first quarter and is expected to continue to shrink until well into 2013 as consumers and businesses rein in spending and the euro zone debt crisis saps investor confidence.

Fears over the health of Spain's economy as it fights to reduce its public deficit has lifted funding costs to euro-era highs in recent weeks leading many to think an application for a full-bailout could soon become inevitable.

A full breakdown of the growth data will be published August 28, while the final price data will be available August 14.

North Korea-China duel expected in weightlifting

North Korea has another chance to spoil weightlifting powerhouse China's gold medal quest Monday in a battle for the men's 62-kilogram category.

Kim Un Guk of North Korea, the 2010 world champion, is up against Chinese rival Zhang Jie, who won the world title last year and holds the total world record in the weight class.

Zhang will be under pressure to put China back on track in the weightlifting competition after countryman Wu Jingbiao finished second Sunday behind surprise North Korea winner Om Yun Chol in the 56-kilogram division.

To make matters worse for China, its medal hopeful in the women's 53-kilogram category, Zhou Jun, was eliminated without a single successful lift. Kazakhstan's Zulifiya Chinshanlo won the gold medal after setting a world record in the clean and jerk.

China's hopes in the women's competition Monday are pinned on Li Xueying, who leads a strong field of competitors in the 58-kilogram category.

Her top challengers include 2011 world champion Nastassia Novikava of Belarus, Pimsiri Sirikaew of Thailand and Kuo Hsing-chun of Taiwan. Novikava got the bronze in a lower weight class in the 2008 Olympics.

On Sunday, Om set an Olympic record in the clean and jerk of 168-kilograms, joining the select few who have lifted three times their body weight.

The 20-year-old Om gave all the credit for his victory to the late North Korea leader Kim Jong Il and his son Kim Jong Un, the nation's new leader.

"The reason that I'm able to get the gold medal at these Olympics is due to the warm love and consideration of General Kim Jong Il and comrade Kim Jong Un," he said through an interpreter. "Because of them, I was able to get great strength today."

Ways To Make Money When Purchasing Real Estate | Fremante ...

If you want to make lots of money and become rich, real estate is going to enable you to achieve that goal. You will have to start off by buying your very first house for a price that you would be able to afford. If possible, contemplate buying a multi-family residence or one which has a basement you can rent out. By being able to rent out extra spaces, you will be getting assistance for paying your monthly deed of trust. A lot of people do this when they are just starting out and it helps them pay off their mortgage much more quickly.

After you have become established with how this market works, it?s worthwhile to take a look at houses in different areas. A lot more people are renting right now, so buying a house you?ll be able to rent out is a great way to make money. For people with some time, you should purchase a house to fix up and then make a profit as soon as the dwelling is being rented out. It?s important that the house you purchase to use as a real estate investment property is in a superb location. If it?s in a bad location, no one will want to rent it out. DC Ranch Scottsdale homes right now are cheaper than ever to purchase, so it?s a terrific market to take advantage of.

After you have a place purchased and ready to rent out, you?ll need to find renters. This is something you can do by yourself or you can utilize a property management group. If you don?t reside in the area it will be simpler to hire an organization to do all the work for you. Though they?ll have to be paid, you will still be generating a profit from the investment property.

As you continue to buy houses, you can be increasing your net worth. Since renters will be covering the cost of your home mortgage, you?ll be paying for quite a few houses simultaneously. After these houses are paid off, the money you receive from rent is yours to keep! Getting involved with real estate investment homes is likely one of the greatest methods to make a lot of money and create a retirement fund in your future.

With interest rates presently at all time lows and mandate for rental houses at an all time high it is smart to get involved with real estate investments. Real estate has made many individuals rich in this Country. Take a look at our real property website for additional data and happy investing!

Minneapolis activists getting ready to march on the RNC | Fight Back!

Minneapolis, MN ? Twin Cities activists came together for a fundraising party here, July 27, to help pay the transportation costs for the vans that are heading to the massive march on the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida. The event, organized by Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), brought in more than $600.

?In 2008, we helped organize a powerful demonstration at the RNC here in Minnesota,? said Tracy Molm of SDS. ?This August, Minnesotans will be going to Tampa to send the Republicans a message. We want good jobs, health care, affordable education, equality and peace.?

Linden Gawboy of the Welfare Rights Committee is helping to coordinate the trip to Tampa. ?Sign up for the trip to this historic protest. The rich and their bought and paid for politicians are waging a war on poor and working people. The RNC is the place where we are going to fight back.?

The Coalition to March on the RNC is organizing a large demonstration on August 27, the first day of the Republican National Convention.

    Turbulences at a standstill

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? Energy flowing from large-scale to small-scale places may be prevented from flowing freely in specific conditions.

For theoretical physicist Dima Shepelyansky from the CNRS-University of Toulouse, France, devising models of chaos and turbulence is his bread and butter. In a recent study published in The European Physical Journal B, he presents an exception he found in a model of turbulence, indicating that there are energy flows from large to small scale in confined space. Indeed, under a specific energy threshold, there are no energy flows, similar to the way electron currents and energy spreading are stopped in disordered solids.

The author relies on numerical simulations to study a kind of turbulence-known as Kolmogorov turbulence-that describes how energy flows from large to small scale in a confined space. According to this concept, energy is introduced on large scales, e.g. by wind, and it is absorbed on small scales due to energy dissipation. This approach assumes that a small perturbation will make the system evolution chaotic as energy flows from large to small scales.

However, Shepelyansky found that a phenomenon normally observed in disordered metals, called Anderson localization, which implies that there is no energy flow from one side of the metal to the other, also occurred with the type of turbulences he was focusing on. As a result, energy flow from large scale to small scale does not happen under specific circumstances where the energy level is below a certain threshold level. This result is in keeping with our intuitive experience of a small wind not creating a storm, and that wind needs to reach a certain threshold before a storm can be created.

Thus his study successfully links three areas of research based on chaos, disordered solids and turbulence, including wave turbulence, dynamical systems and statistical mechanics.

Gene therapy holds promise for reversing congenital hearing loss

    Thursday, July 26, 2012

A new gene therapy approach can reverse hearing loss caused by a genetic defect in a mouse model of congenital deafness, according to a preclinical study published by Cell Press in the July 26 issue of the journal Neuron. The findings present a promising therapeutic avenue for potentially treating individuals who are born deaf.

"This is the first time that an inherited, genetic hearing loss has been successfully treated in laboratory mice, and as such represents an important milestone for treating genetic deafness in humans," says senior study author Lawrence Lustig of the University of California, San Francisco.

Hearing loss is one of the most common human sensory deficits, and it results from damage to hair cells in the inner ear. About half of the cases of congenital hearing loss are caused by genetic defects. However, the current treatment options?hearing amplification devices and cochlear implants?do not restore hearing to normal levels. Correcting the underlying genetic defects has the potential to fully restore hearing, but previous attempts to reverse hearing loss caused by genetic mutations have not been successful.

Addressing this challenge in the new study, Lustig and his team used mice with hereditary deafness caused by a mutation in a gene coding for a protein called vesicular glutamate transporter-3 (VGLUT3). This protein is crucial for inner hair cells to send signals that enable hearing. Two weeks after the researchers delivered the VGLUT3 gene into the inner ear through an injection, hearing was restored in all of the mice. This improvement lasted between seven weeks and one and a half years when adult mice were treated, and at least nine months when newborn mice received the treatment.

The therapy did not damage the inner ear, and it even corrected some structural defects in the inner hair cells. Because the specific gene delivery method used is safe and effective in animals, the findings hold promise for future human studies. "For years, scientists have been hinting at the possibility of gene therapy as a potential cure for deafness," Lustig says. "In this study, we now provide a very real and big step towards that goal."

Meet The Newest Cable TV Company: Google - Business Insider

Google just became a cable company ? or at least, announced it intention to become one.

That's the news out of Kansas City.

This is part of the Google Fiber project, where Google built a? ~$500 million fiber optic network in Kansas City to provide those folks with an Internet that is 100 times faster than what the rest of the world uses. Google Fiber launched today.

The news about the TV service was part of that launch.

Updated: Google posted a pretty amazing list of TV networks that will participate. The kind you can only get from your cable or satellite providers." Google Fiber TV service will be HD quality and include a DVR that lets you record up to 500 hours of shows in full HDTV. It will also offer apps for the iPad and for Android tablets.

This high speed Internet service plus TV will cost $120 a month.

But there's a hitch, Hesseldahl reports. Google isn't going to build it first and offer it to everyone. Neighborhoods are going to have to get together and petition for the new service, so that Google knows? it will have enough customers in the area to make it a profitable investment.

The ramifications of this announcement are obviously huge. Google already controls the way people navigate the Internet. If the company gains control of how people physically get onto the Internet ? the hard to control "last mile" ? Google will possess incredible power in negotiations with Hollywood and Madison Avenue. It will also spook some in Cupertino, where Apple is said to be working on a TV.

Google posted an hour-long video on YouTube of the announcement. The Google TV demo comes at 28:54.

Malaysia?s Multi-Religious Society threatened by ?Politics of Emotion and of Identity?, says Scholar and Islamic Philosopher Tariq Ramadan

    by Harakah Daily

European Muslim scholar Tariq Ramadan, penning some observations of his recent Malaysian tour, has warned that Malaysia?s multi-religious society and huge potential to play a significant role globally were being threatened by ?politics of emotion and of identity?.

?The fault-lines are visible, especially on the eve of anticipated elections,? said the Swiss academic, writing in his column in Dubai-based English daily Gulf News.

Tariq (right) opined that Malaysia, alongside Indonesia, has the potential to play significant role at the world economic stage, adding that the two countries had often been overlooked because attention was focused on China and India.

But he cautioned that despite Malaysia?s multi-cultural heritage as well as a ?first-rate? economic and geo-strategic potential, a cacophony of political tensions and slogans, many of which referred to Islam, posed obstacles.

Tariq, who spoke at several events in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, highlighted a prevalent view among the non-Muslim minority that they are being marginalised in the wake of Islam becoming a ?permanent reference in political debate?, comparing similar debates among Muslim minorities in the West.

?Like the mirror image of many Muslim citizens in the West, they may be perfectly respectful of the constitution, of the laws and prerogatives of the civil state, but it is as if they are slightly excluded from the shared narrative upon which the Malaysian nation is founded. It has proved difficult for them to achieve the fully equal status that would establish their sense of belonging to a pluralist society,? he said.

He noted how the presence of large number of Indonesian immigrants had fed into the existing political rhetoric, lamenting frequently hostile policy ?towards the very immigrants the country needs?.

The grandson of the founder of Egypt?s Muslim Brotherhood Hasan al-Banna, Tariq, who teaches at the Faculty of Oriental Studies in Oxford, also commented on what he described was a penchant for ?Islamising? modernism, capitalism and consumerism, ?a strange mixture indeed?.

    Impressed with Perlis Mosque-Majid Al-Hussain

But what impressed him the most during his many tours here is a mosque in Perlis built along traditional architecture and which incorporates green technology.

Tariq said it was a far cry from the ?American-style modernism? which according to him characterised Kuala Lumpur?s buildings.

?The contrast between the capital, Kuala Lumpur, and other cities is striking. Here, looming skyscrapers surround the celebrated twin towers that challenge America?s tallest?

?There, a superb structure built on supporting piers, known as the ?floating mosque?, reflects the extraordinary maritime landscape. Fifty per cent of its electricity consumption is generated by wind turbines and, when completed, solar panels will account for its remaining energy needs: A ?green? mosque beneath whose dome Islamic scriptural references are inscribed in the five national languages, to signify that Islam is not the property of one language and one culture,? he wrote.

Tariq further hailed the mosque as possibly the ?symbol of Muslims? greatest contribution to an era in search of meaning: To express its specificity in universal terms, in full respect of pluralism and to respond in full awareness and with all necessary expertise, to the challenges of our time,? said Tariq, whose recent works include the book The Quest for Meaning.

He is believed to be referring to the Al-Hussain Mosque in Kuala Perlis (above). Facing the Straits of Malacca near the Kuala Perlis jetty, the construction of the mosque was financed by entrepreneur Ta Sri Mohd. Ariffin Yusuf to fulfill the dying wish of his brother Dr Mohd. Hussain after whom the mosque was named.

?This mosque is ultimately far more ?modern? than all the blind mimicry of American models,? added Tariq. ?What a pleasure to pray in such a mosque: one senses the encounter of intelligence and creative imagination.?

NIST updates guidance on network attacks and malware

Detecting and stopping malicious attacks on computer networks is a central focus of computer security these days. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is asking for comments on two updated guides on malicious computer attacks: one on preventing, detecting, and responding to attacks and one on preventing and mitigating the effects of malware, a potent tool in an attacker's arsenal.

The publications are being revised to reflect the changes in threats and incidents.

Malware, also known as malicious code, is a common tool that attackers use to breach computer networks today, causing damage and disruption, and often requiring extensive recovery efforts. "Malware threats in the past tended to spread quickly and were easy to discover," explains co-author Karen Scarfone, "but today's malware threats are stealthier, specifically designed to quietly, slowly spread, gathering information over extended time frames and eventually leading to loss of sensitive data and other problems."

The updated Guide to Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems describes software that has become a necessary addition to the security infrastructure of many organizations.

Intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPSs) record information about observed security-related events, notify security administrators of the events that should be analyzed further and produce reports for evaluation. Many IDPSs respond to and try to stop detected threats by using a variety of techniques.

The guidance describes the characteristics of IDPS technologies and provides recommendations for designing, implementing, configuring, securing, monitoring and maintaining them. The publication discusses four types of IDPS technologies: network-based, wireless, network behavior analysis and host-based.

"IDPS for wireless is an important type for all organizations to have because of the growth of mobile devices and employees' desire to use their own wireless device for work," says Scarfone.

While many agencies and companies are going mobile, it is still critical to protect desktops and laptops. The Guide to Malware Incident Prevention and Handling for Desktops and Laptops is a supplement to another draft document, Computer Security Incident Handling Guide (SP 800-61).* It gives background information on the major categories of malware that afflict desktop and laptop computers and provides practical guidance on how to prevent malware incidents and on what to do when a system is infected. The revised version of SP 800-61 is expected to be published later this summer.

Recommended measures include developing prevention plans based on the attacks that are most likely to be used now and in the near future, using defensive architecture methods to reduce the impact of malware incidents, and including malware incident prevention in employee awareness and training programs.

What success or failure on Mars would mean

Experts at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory share the challenges of the Curiosity rover's landing plan.

    By Alan Boyle

Anyone who's looked at the "Seven Minutes of Terror" trailer for next month's Mars landing might have wondered whether the planners behind NASA's $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory mission really knew what they were doing ? and although the planners insist they're confident, they also say they're nervous.

"There's not a whole lot we can do about it at this point, except just be nervous," said Dave Beaty, chief scientist for the Mars Exploration Directorate at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

You can test the mood for yourself by tuning in our "Virtually Speaking Science" talk show at 9 p.m. ET tonight, via BlogTalkRadio or the Second Life virtual world. Beaty and I will be talking about the buildup to the Aug. 5 landing, and taking your questions through Second Life, Twitter (use the hashtag #askvs) and the phone lines. If you can't make it, don't worry: You'll be able to listen to the hourlong podcast via BlogTalkRadio's archive or iTunes.

    Falling into place
All the pieces are falling into place for the Mars Science Laboratory's landing sequence, aimed at putting the subcompact car-sized Curiosity rover down within Gale Crater. On Tuesday,?NASA maneuvered its Mars Odyssey?orbiter into the correct trajectory to pass over the landing site just in time to pick up telemetry from the probe.

The MSL spacecraft is currently within 2.2 million miles (3.6 million kilometers) of Mars and closing in fast. The big nail-biter is scheduled for just after 10 p.m. PT on Aug. 5 (1 a.m. ET Aug. 6), when the spacecraft is supposed to blaze through Mars' atmosphere, spring a parachute, pop off its heat shield and let loose a rocket-powered sky crane platform that will hover about 66 feet (20 meters) above the Martian surface and lower Curiosity on cables. Then the cables will cut loose and the sky crane will fly itself out of the way, leaving Curiosity to get down to business.

    JPL

Dave Beaty is chief scientist for the Mars Exploration Directorate at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

    What were they thinking???

"I've met with the engineers," Beaty told me. "I've seen their presentations, and they can be very convincing. But you have to hold your breath a little bit and trust that they know what they're doing."

This?multibillion-dollar mission depends on everything working right?? and there's even more at stake than just the mission. If next month's landing fails, that could spark even more questions about the future of NASA's troubled Mars exploration effort. The failures of Mars Climate Orbiter and Mars Polar Lander in 1999 led to years of rethinking and retrenchment, and the soul-searching would probably go far deeper in this current age of tightened budgets and downscaled ambitions.

On the other hand, a successful landing would set a sunny tone for what's likely to be years of exploration by the most capable interplanetary robot ever created. During tonight's talk show, Beaty will probably be a lot more willing to talk about that type of scenario, just as he was when I interviewed him on Monday. Check out this edited transcript, and bring your follow-up questions to "Virtually Speaking Science" at 9 p.m. ET.

Cosmic Log: So, there's less than two weeks before the big Mars landing?? what's going on there at JPL?

Dave Beaty: We're getting very nervous. There's not a whole lot we can do about it at this point, except just be nervous. But this is a significant thing. It's one of these points in history that may change the trajectory of things that happen afterward, whether we end up with a successful landing or an unsuccessful landing.

Q: What do you see as the outcome for failure, and the outcome for failure? What would that mean to the Mars exploration program?

A: Well, just having a successful landing, by itself, is of course huge good news. It enables the scientific return from the mission to happen, which will play out over the next Mars year?? that's two Earth years, more or less. Once the rover lands, it has to raise its antenna, do some checkouts, get moving, and then drive over to this mountain that has the stratigraphy we're interested in.

It's sort of like the Grand Canyon way of looking at rock. You get this beautiful exposure of stratigraphy because of the erosion of this mountain. We want to climb up the side of the mountain and check the layering, like John Wesley Powell did just after the Civil War when he went one-arming up and down the Grand Canyon. That was one of the great geological expeditions of all time, as far as I'm concerned.

The site we want to look at is great. It's a little hard to predict exactly what we're going to see inside those rocks if we end up on the success pathway. We know what we're looking for: What are the rocks? What is the nature of the layering? Are there signals that the layers were "habitable"?? i.e., had the potential for a life form to have lived there, had a life form been present. If there's a positive outcome on that, then we would definitely want to send another mission ??either back to the same place, to check out whether there's any sign of something actually there; or potentially to another place that has the same kind of layering, but some other kind of characteristic.

Here on Earth, one of the big issues we face is that the preservation of the signs of life is very uneven. We know that there's life everywhere on Earth, right? And it's been here in sort of the form that we see it when we look out our windows, back to the time of the Cambrian, which is 600 million years ago. But if you look at the sedimentary rocks, they don't all contain fossils, they don't all contain pollen. You've got to look carefully to understand what has happened to the rock since its formation, and whether it would have included the signs of life, and whether those signs would have survived through all the subsequent things that happened to the rock.

It's not a guarantee that we would go back to exactly the same place, but we would certainly want to go back somewhere if we received this encouragement.

Q: And the implications of failure?

A: If it's a bad landing, the question would be, what is the reason why? In my experience, the public and Congress and all the people surrounding us would be accepting of a failure that was just a bad weather day, or if you land sideways on a rock, or some other sort of bad luck that happens because of what Mars has done to us. They tend to be less forgiving of a mistake made by a human being here on Earth. So, those are two very different kinds of scenarios. Just the fact of a bad day doesn't tell you enough to know what the implication might be.?

Seven minutes of terror is what NASA is calling the waiting period to find out whether the Curiosity rover has survived what could be the trickiest landing ever attempted. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

Q: A lot of people wonder about how the sky crane is going to work, or whether the heat shield will work properly?? the "seven minutes of terror." Is that what you have in mind? Everything that could be done has been done, of course, but if something goes wrong, I suspect people will want to focus on the process for doing something that's never been done before.

A: Almost everything we do at Mars has never been done before. That's what makes this exciting from the point of view of the engineers. They're here to do the impossible. That sky crane landing has some very powerful advantages, if it works. I've met with the engineers, I've seen their presentations, and they can be very convincing. But you have to hold your breath a little bit and trust that they know what they're doing.

Q: If everything works nominally, will we see the sky crane become the main method for getting large payloads down to the surface of Mars?

A: I absolutely think so. For the robotic exploration missions, the bigger question is, do we want the payloads to keep getting bigger? We know for sure that the pathway to eventual human missions has to involve bigger and bigger payloads, because the humans and all their support systems are heavy. This particular landing system will land a payload that's bigger than can be landed with airbags. The airbag would not survive. So it is heading in the direction that we need to follow if we believe in eventual human exploration. Whether the next robotic mission needs to be the same size as MSL?? that's an interesting question. We may want to get it smaller, in part to bring the cost down.

Q: What's your role going to be on the night of the landing?

A: I just got my assignment. I will be at Beckman?Auditorium at Caltech, with an audience of 1,136 people, which is the auditorium's capacity. I'll be standing in front of them with the NASA feed on the screen behind me, and my instructions are to narrate it like a tennis match. You can interject a little bit of commentary, but you don't want to detract from the main show, which is what's on the screen.

Q: So when will you know if the landing's been successful?

A: The landing itself is at 10:32 p.m. Pacific time, and we've placed both orbiters [Mars Odyssey and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter] so they will be in position to watch the descent as it comes down. By 10:32 or 10:33, they should have the data to know whether the landing was successful. They may get an ambiguous answer and not know for sure whether it was successful or not successful. That may take a little while longer to sort that out. It's hard to end up with a for-sure crash scenario quickly, because the signals are likely to be less than obvious. But if it's successful, we'll know very quickly.

Stop acquisition, probe firing, say Rewari farmers - Real Estate India

    ??|?? July 25, 2012 ?? 04:50pm ??|Contributed by MANOJa

GURGAON: Ahead of their crucial meeting with the Haryana chief minister, Rewari farmers are firm on their demand to seek immediate cancellation of land acquisition proceedings and compensation to those injured in Sunday?s police firing.

The representatives of Bhoomi Adhigrahan Virodh Sangharsh Samiti (BAVSS) have also demanded a judicial probe into the shooting incident. ?We are hopeful that the state government will concede to our demand of judicial probe into the firing and cancellation of land acquisition,? said Ram Kishen Mehlawat, president of BAVSS. The villagers have been agitating against the land acquisition of over 3,000 acres in the region. The notification regarding the proceedings of the acquisition was issued last month.

The protest became violent on Sunday and the police had to resort to firing, in which several were injured and three villagers were shot. ?The judicial probe is a must, to know why the orders of police firing were given and who had given them. The injured should also be given compensation,? said Mehlawat. He added that two of the three villagers, Satbeer and Om Prakash are battling for their lives in a private hospital in Rewari while the third, Mahinder Singh is admitted in a Gurgaon hospital.

The villagers are also demanding the withdrawal of cases that have been registered against the protesters. Police have registered three FIRs and arrested scores of villagers in connection to Sunday?s violence. BAVSS representatives said that the state government must not be in a tearing hurry to go ahead with the acquisition since the new legislation on land acquisition is still pending in Parliament. ?The state government must not force the villagers to hand over their land as per old policy when the central government has conceptualized a new land acquisition policy focusing on the welfare of villagers and land owners,? said Mehlawat.

The villagers have pledged not to launch another protest if their demands are met and if the government reverses the land acquisition.

James Holmes' behavior sign of psychosis or faking it, expert says

Accused movie theater gunman James Holmes was not on drugs when he appeared dazed in court, but experts are looking for explanations for his odd behavior that included turning evidence bags on his hands into puppets after his arrest, sources told ABC News.

The loopy, seemingly unconcerned actions by the former Ph.D student accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 is seen by some as signs of psychosis -- or that he's faking it.

Sources tell ABC News that Holmes was not on drugs or medication at the time of the hearing, but Holmes has demonstrated a pattern of bizarre behavior since his arrest outside an Aurora, Colo., movie theater last Friday.

When Holmes was arrested he told police he was the fictitious Batman villain, The Joker. When police put evidence bags over his hands to preserve traces of gunpowder residue, Holmes pretended the bags were puppets, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

Holmes has acted unfazed by his arrest, police say. He has been uncooperative since he was taken into custody, giving investigators little information, and yet disclosing his apartment was booby trapped with dozens of explosives.

His behavior in court Monday was particularly strange. Unshaven, with a shock of died orange hair, Holmes alternated between staring wide-eyed to closing his eyes and appearing to nod off.

His lawyer even had to nudge him to rise when the judge entered the courtroom. He said nothing during the proceedings, in which he was held without bond.

Some observers wondered if Holmes was on drugs or being medicated. Sources told ABC News, he was not on drugs, leading to expert theories that he may have been in the grips of "psychotic episode," exhausted from stress or simply faking it.

"I think there are two possibilities going on here," Marissa Randazzo, former chief research psychologist for the U.S. Secret Service and an expert in mass shootings, told "Good Morning America" today.

"One is that he is in the middle of a psychotic episode which is quite possible. We see him distracted at multiple points, an almost sort of 'coming to' and trying to figure out where he is and process what's going on," she said.

"The other thing that we're seeing -- and we've seen some of this behavior in the past couple months -- might suggest mania. Meaning hyperactivity, hyper energy, been possibly up and not sleeping for days. What we might be seeing here is the post effects."

But Randazzo also said there was a third possibility. He might simply be faking it.

"It's possible," she said when asked if Holmes' behavior could be all an act. "It is possible. We'll leave that open," she said, adding that most people who lie about that sort of behavior are sociopaths and "What we've heard about his history does not suggest sociopath at all."

"Let's keep that in mind that he was studying neuroscience. He was studying exactly the type of brain issues that we're going to be talking about throughout this whole case," she said.
