Bargain hunters divided shopping season into two (AP)

NEW YORK ? The holiday shopping season turned out to be two seasons: the Black Friday binge and a last-minute surge.

Together, they added up to decent sales gains for retailers. And the doldrums in between showed how shoppers have learned to wait for the discounts they know will come.

"The days that the American consumer gets excited about 25 percent off are over," said C. Britt Beemer, chairman of America's Research Group. "Shoppers are keeping their eye on the ball for the big sales events."

In November, spending rose 4.1 percent. And from Dec. 1 to Dec. 24, it rose 4.7 percent compared with the same period last year, according to research firm ShopperTrak. A 4 percent increase is considered a healthy season.

The higher sales are good news for the economy, because they show shoppers were willing to fund a holiday splurge despite high unemployment and other lingering economic woes. Consumer spending, including major items such as health care, accounts for 70 percent of the economy.

Still, plenty of people are pinched for cash in the slow economic recovery, and they were seeking the best deals, which could squeeze stores' profits for the fourth quarter, says Hana Ben-Shabat, a partner in the retail practice of A.T. Kearney, a management consulting firm.

Stores have trained even shoppers who are primed to spend to look for a discount.

Heading into the season, stores were nervous that shoppers would be tight-fisted. Many officially opened the season with discounts on TVs and toys that started as early as Thanksgiving Day. Consumers came out in droves, resulting in record spending.

Then the frenzy tapered off. A mild winter and the fact that Christmas fell on a Sunday encouraged people to wait until the last minute and accentuated the peaks and valleys of spending.

Stores started to push more discounts to get shoppers to spend in the finale. In fact, retailers' promotional e-mails from Sunday, Dec. 18, to Thursday, Dec. 22, spiked 34 percent, compared with the same period a year ago, according to Responsys, which tracks e-mail activity from more than 100 merchants.

According to Beemer's consumer surveys, 60 percent of shoppers polled were looking for discounts of more than 50 percent to get them to buy. That's up from last year's 51 percent of shoppers polled.

Tracey Spears of Locust Grove, Ga., who was shopping Wednesday at Atlanta's Lenox Square Mall, said she got 75 percent of her holiday shopping done on Black Friday or the day after Thanksgiving. She took advantage of deals, including a Keurig coffee pot from Target and clothes from Hollister on sale.

"I had more money because I got a better bonus this year, but sales are important. You always want to buy stuff cheaper," she said.

Spears and others helped to create pronounced waves in spending.

"The downs and ups were much more accentuated," said Michael P. Niemira, chief economist at the International Council of Shopping Centers. "It just shows how cautious the consumer is. Consumers are bargain hunters more today than ever before."

In the week before Christmas, last-minute shoppers gave retailers a 4.5 percent increase in revenue over the same week last year at stores open at least a year, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Store Sales Index. The index estimates sales at 24 major stores including Macy's Inc. and Costco Wholesale Corp.

Revenue at stores open at least a year is an important measurement of a retailer's performance because it excludes the effects of stores that open or close during the year.

Total retail revenue for the week ended Saturday rose 14.8 percent compared with the year ago, ShopperTrak estimates.

For the week that ended Nov. 26, which included the traditional start of holiday shopping on the day after Thanksgiving, stores had the biggest sales surge from the week before since 1993, according to the ICSC-Goldman Sachs index.

The post-Black Friday lull was deeper than usual. The two weeks after Thanksgiving weekend showed the biggest percentage sales decline since 2000.

Then, during the final two weeks before Christmas, sales surged again, by the highest rate since 2005, Niemira said.

The season "was good but uneven," he said.

Stores are expected to benefit when shoppers come back to spend gift cards, because people often spend more than the cards' value. In addition, gift card sales are recorded only when shoppers redeem them.

People have more money on their cards to spend. According to an ICSC-Goldman Sachs survey of shoppers conducted Sunday, 18 percent of holiday spending went toward gift cards, up from 14.6 percent last year.

A total sales figure for the whole season won't be available until after Dec. 31. And a fuller holiday spending picture will come Jan. 5, when stores including Target Corp. and Macy's release December sales figures. Government retail sales data will be released in mid-January.

ICSC said it expects holiday sales for November and December to rise in line with its forecast of 3.5 percent. The National Retail Federation expects total retail sales for November and December combined to increase by 3.8 percent, up from its earlier forecast of 2.8 percent issued back in October. That's still below the 5.2 percent holiday sales increase in 2010 from the previous year.

As proof that consumers are timing their spending to seek the best bargains, Black Friday was the biggest sales day, as expected, generating sales of $11.4 billion, up 6.6 percent from a year ago, according to ShopperTrak.

But based on preliminary data, Christmas Eve and Dec. 26 were the second- and third-heaviest spending days of the season, according to ShopperTrak founder Bill Martin.

He had originally expected Saturday, Dec. 17, to be the second-largest spending day. And Christmas Eve wasn't even forecast to be among the top 10 holiday shopping days.

ShopperTrak measures foot traffic in 25,000 stores in the U.S. and blends those figures with economic data along with proprietary sales figures from merchants. The data excludes sales from auto dealers, gas stations, restaurants and grocery stores.

"Shoppers are willing to spend when they know the biggest discounts are available," Martin said.

Brooks Brothers, the upscale men's and women's clothier that doesn't discount before Christmas, learned that this year. The Monday after Christmas, when the company offered discounts up to 40 percent, was a record spending day at its stores and its website.

"The first three weeks leading up to holiday were soft," Lou Amendola, chief merchandising officer, wrote in an email. "But customers really partook in the after-Christmas sales."

Kid Cudi on Ben Breedlove: Late Teen is My Hero

On Christmas Day, Ben Breedlove - a teenager in Austin who who suffered for years from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy - passed away, but not before he recorded a pair of moving YouTube videos.

In the messages, Breedlove tells his life story, including multiple brushes with death, the final one taking place when he passed out in his high school hallway, leading to a peaceful vision that included a white room, a white suit and a visit from his favorite rapper, Kid Cudi.

"I then looked at myself in the mirror," Breedlove writes on a notecard in the video. "I was proud of MYSELF, of my entire life, everything I have done."

Ben's mother says the videos were a "gift" to the family, while Kid Cudi has chimed in on his blog, writing:

"This is why I do what I do. Why I write my life, and why I love you all so much. Life is really f– up sometimes... I know Ben is at Peace. To Ben's family, you raised a real hero, he's definitely mine."

Amen.

Health Tip: When Children Break the Rules (HealthDay)

(HealthDay News) -- Children often perpetuate a behavior when it's rewarded, and stop a behavior when it's ignored, the American Academy of Family Physicians says.

So what can parents do to encourage good behavior? The academy offers these suggestions:

  • Make it clear that bad behavior is not acceptable.
  • Be clear in explaining the rules and your expectations, and how the child can be rewarded.
  • Instead of punishing a child for not following the rules, do not give the child any reward.
  • Rewards may be determined by setting a timer for completion of a task, or by giving children a "star" each time they practice good behavior. After a predetermined number of stars is reached, give the child a reward.

PMC riders bare it all for cancer research

More a dozen Pan-Massachusetts Challenge riders and supporters have stepped out of their comfort zone ? and their clothing ? to raise money for cancer research and treatment.

Baring It All For Cancer Research is a 2012 monthly calendar featuring PMC riders wearing only their birthday suits ? tastefully covered with strategically placed PMC jerseys, merchandise, signs and bikes.

Veteran PMC rider Alan Clarance of Maynard came up with the fundraising idea after watching the 2003 movie ?Calendar Girls,? based on a true story of a group of women who posed nude for a calendar for charity, causing a media sensation.

?It?s about putting yourself in a place where you don?t really go? how far you?re ready to go to help find a cure for cancer. That was the challenge I put forth to my teammates,? Clarance said.

Clarence has been participating in the PMC for nine years.

He said the group of 14 riders, which has no team name, was already raising money and doing the two-day ride, so why not go the extra mile for a good cause. The riders hail from Boston, New York, Brookine, Maynard, Arlington and Newton.

Clarance said the team has been riding together for the past three years. In 2011, the team raised $250,000; in 2010, they raised $158,000; in 2009, the riders raised $123,818 for cancer research.

Asked how they raise that much money, he said simply, ?You ask a lot of people. It?s a second job almost.?

Shawn Bohen, Clarance?s girlfriend, said posing for the calendar was an easy decision.

?I?ve had a lot of people in my life who have struggled with cancer,? she said, adding when compared to what they people have gone through enduring cancer treatments, getting naked was not a problem.

?It?s really an important cause and we thought it was a fun way to raise money for such an important cause,? said Bohen.

The calendar includes riders and cancer survivors who ride in the PMC.

Making the calendar proved to be more risqu? than the participants thought: all of the photographs were shot outside in public, often with passers-by getting a look. The photos were taken in Manhattan and Larz Anderson Park in Brookline.

Clarance is the feature photo for September, posing with Bohen, covered by a PMC sign.

Kelly Hardebeck, a three-year rider, said posing for the calendar ? she?s the back cover ? was exciting.

?Training for and riding in the PMC stretches you physically, but then the ride is so rewarding,? Hardebeck said. ?It?s easy to get addicted. The photo shoot was also an experience that stretched me, but we all know it?s for a good cause.?

The calendars cost $20 and all of the money raised will support the PMC.

In addition to Clarance, Bohen and Hardebeck, team members include: Imogen Louise, Stuart Childress, Mariah Peebles, Joe Adu, Casey Recupero, Bill Lehman, Susan Murray, Charkie Quarcoo, Elyse Rosenblum, Christopher Thorson and Rasheba Johnson.

Photographers Debra Rose, Carmen Morosan, Andrea Fischman and The Essential Images all donated their services to create the calendar.

For more information, or to buy a Baring it All for Cancer Research 2012 calendar, email Clarance at aaclarance@yahoo.com.

Festivus tidings: Airing some TV grievances about 'Community,' 'Mad Men' and more

festivus-tv-grievances.jpgDec. 23 is a holy day for TV nerds like us, for it is the day we celebrate Festivus.

The made-up holiday entered our consciousness thanks to "Seinfeld" writer Daniel O'Keefe, who based a December 1997 episode he wrote on experiences he had growing up. (You can go here to watch a collection of clips from the episode.) The ceiling in the Zap2it office is too low for a properly majestic aluminum pole, and liability concerns led us to scrap the feats of strength.

But we can still air some grievances. We covered some of our gripes with the current TV landscape in our "We're over it" gallery last week, but we'd like to expand on a couple of those and talk about some of the other ways TV has disappointed us this year.

You've heard us and many others complain about the indefinite benching of "Community" and "Cougar Town." But what's most disappointing, NBC and ABC scheduling and PR teams, is that at least a little of the outrage could have been avoided. We still would have been upset not to see those shows on your respective midseason schedules, but we would have gotten about 10 to 15 percent less worked up had you simply included a line like, "These shows will return in the spring." Would that have really been so hard?

While we're at it, ABC, "Work It"? Seriously? (Consider this a pre-aired grievance for 2012.)

AMC, first let us start by saying thank you for a season of "Breaking Bad" so good that it pretty well makes up for the non-ending of "The Killing." But we're still a little peeved that your drawn-out negotiations over the future of "Mad Men" meant a full year without new episodes of the series. And by the way, how's about cluing us in on a premiere date?

The "We're over it" gallery pretty well covered our loathing of two-hour reality shows, but we'd like to mention it just again. For a premiere or a finale? Sure. Every week? No, no and no.

We understand, Showtime, that you may have felt "United States of Tara" had run its course after three seasons, and we know its ratings were not very good. But that third season was so fantastic, and Toni Collette so great in it, that we really wish you could have found a way to make even an abbreviated fourth season work.

Finally, The CW, we haven't entirely forgiven you for "H8R." Sure, we had some laughs making fun of it, and we applaud the TV-watching public for realizing it wasn't worth their time. But the three episodes you aired were three too many.

What TV-based grievances do you have this Festivus?

Obama DOJ Makes It Easier For Legal 'Aliens' To Get Guns ...

In the midst of the Fast and Furious scandal, the Obama administration just made it easier for immigrants in the United States legally to purchase weapons from licensed firearms dealers.

Under the Gun Control Act (GCA), individuals are generally prohibited from transferring firearms to ?any unlicensed person who they know or have reasonable cause to believe does not reside in the State in which the transferor resides.?

But federal firearms regulations have defined ?state of residence? differently for U.S. citizens and aliens, according to an open letter to federally licensed firearms dealers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). While a U.S. citizen?s state of residence is where they intend to make a home; an ?alien? is only considered a resident if they ?resided in that State for a period of at least 90 days prior to the date of transfer with the intention of making a home.?

In a letter sent on Thursday to federally licensed firearms dealers, ATF said that the Justice Department ?has recently concluded that, as a matter of law, applying a more stringent State residency requirement for aliens legally present in the U.S. than for U.S. citizens is incompatible with the language of the GCA.?

ATF will be revising their regulations and removing the 90-day requirement for legal non-residents.

?Once the regulations have been revised, both U.S. citizens and aliens legally present in the U.S. will be subject to the same requirements for State residency and proof of residency,? ATF?s letter states.

The Obama Justice Department?s decision to revoke the 90-day requirement and make it easier for legal non-residents to purchase weapons comes as Republicans have accused DOJ of engaging in a far-fetched conspiracy to let guns ?walk? over the border in order to enact restrictions on gun rights. The move, which comes after the administration signed bills into law that made it legal to carry weapons on Amtrak and in national parks, isn?t likely to earn the administration any fans in the gun-control lobby.

A Justice Department spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

(AP) ? Ties between France and Turkey, strategic allies and trading partners, abruptly unraveled Thursday after French legislators passed a bill making it a crime to deny that the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks nearly a century ago constitute genocide.

The bill strikes at the heart of national honor in Turkey, which denies the genocide label and insists the 1915 massacres occurred during civil unrest as the Ottoman Empire collapsed, with losses on both sides. But it's seen as a matter of principle for some French politicians, and a matter of long-overdue justice for the half a million people in France of Armenian descent, many of whom had relatives among the 1.5 million Armenians killed.

The French bill still needs Senate approval, but after it passed the lower house, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan halted bilateral political and economic contacts, suspended military cooperation and ordered his country's ambassador home for consultations. Turkey argues France is trampling freedom of expression and that French President Nicolas Sarkozy is on a vote-getting mission before April presidential elections.

France formally recognized the 1915 killings as genocide in 2001, but provided no penalty for anyone refuting that. The bill passed Thursday sets a punishment of up to one year in prison and a fine of euro45,000 ($59,000) for those who deny or "outrageously minimize" the killings, putting such action on par with denial of the Holocaust.

The diplomatic riposte by Turkey over the vote by lawmakers in France's lower house, the National Assembly, may get even tougher. It hurts ties as both NATO members are involved in international efforts for peace from Syria to Afghanistan.

"Our measures and precautions will come to life stage-by-stage according to France's position," Erdogan told reporters in Ankara.

France expressed regret over Turkey's response.

"It is important, in the current context, that we keep the paths of dialogue and cooperation open," Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said in a statement.

Strains have plagued the relationship between Paris and Ankara in recent years, in large part because Sarkozy opposes mostly-Muslim Turkey's bid to join the European Union. The bill reached the French parliament after Sarkozy visited Armenia in October and urged Turkey, "a great country" to "honor itself by revisiting its history like other countries in the world have done."

But for it to become law, the Senate must also pass the bill. There is a small window of time to quickly do so, between Jan. 10 and Feb. 24 when a four-month freeze on all but the most critical legislation goes into effect ahead of spring presidential and legislative elections.

There's no guarantee this will be a speedy process. A similar piece of legislation passed by the lower house in 2006 took five years to reach the Senate, which rejected it.

Most historians contend the killings of the Armenians constituted the first genocide of the 20th century. But the issue is dicey for any government that wants a strong alliance with Turkey, a rising power. In Washington, President Barack Obama has stopped short of calling the killings genocide.

An estimated 500,000 Armenians live in France, and many have pressed to raise the legal statute regarding the massacres to the same level as the Holocaust by punishing the denial of genocide.

But the Turkish premier called the legislation's approval "unjust and unfortunate," adding, "There is no genocide in our history, we do not accept it."

"As of now, we are canceling bilateral level political, economic and military activities," Erdogan announced. "We are suspending all kinds of political consultations with France" and "bilateral military cooperation, joint maneuvers are canceled as of now."

The Turkish prime minister said requests for military overflights or landings on Turkish territory would be assessed on a case-by-case basis while permissions granted to French military vessels to dock at Turkish ports would be canceled.

Military cooperation between France and Turkey was suspended in 2006 after the lower-house bid in France to punish deniers of an Armenian genocide. Military cooperation was gradually resumed but remains limited.

Turkey did not limit its actions to ties with Ankara. Sounding almost vindictive, Erdogan threatened to denounce France in Africa and the Middle East.

"We will inform Africa, we will inform the Middle East and when traveling in many countries we will talk about genocides which they have been trying to make (the world) forget about," he said. It was a reference to France's colonial past in Algeria, where massacres were carried out, and to Rwanda where some claim a French role in the 1994 genocide.

It was clear long before the vote ? easily passed with a show of hands ? that France was on a collision course with Turkey. Ankara had threatened to remove Ambassador Tahsin Burcuoglu if French lawmakers did not desist and warned of "grave consequences" to political and economic ties.

The ambassador said he is leaving on the first flight out of Paris Friday morning. He said that diplomacy is never black and white. "There are always gray pages but now, these pages become blacker and blacker," he told reporters in Paris on Thursday night.

Erdogan, a devout Muslim who over the years raised the profile of Turkey's governing Islamic-rooted party, suggested France's bid to punish those who deny the Armenian genocide was in part a way to lure far-right voters to Sarkozy's camp by kindling the fires of Islamaphobia.

"This decision is cause for concern not only for France where there are efforts to make gains through enmity toward Turks and Turkey, and in general terms, through Islamaphobia, but also for Europe and principles defended by Europe," he said.

"I ask: Is there freedom of expression in France? Let me answer it myself: No. (This decision) has eliminated the environment of free thought."

Some French lawmakers expressed outraged at Turkey's attempt to sway their vote and a demonstration by Turks living in France outside the National Assembly.

"The fact that we are subject to pressures ... in front of the National Assembly where the heart of the (French) Republic beats, I find that particularly shocking," said Valerie Boyer, author of the measure and lawmaker from Sarkozy's conservative UMP party.

"Laws voted in this chamber cannot be dictated by Ankara," said Jean-Christophe Lagarde, a deputy from the New Center party.

For many French Armenians, the legislation's advancement meant a swell of relief.

"Our ancestors can finally rest in peace," said 75-year-old Maurice Delighazarian, who said his grandparents on both sides were among the victims of the 1915 massacre.

HBT: Cubs said to be favorites to get Fielder

Yesterday there were conflicting reports about the Cubs? interest in Prince Fielder, with Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com saying they were ?stepping up their pursuit? and Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe saying they?re ?not major players? for the free agent first baseman.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com chimed in on the situation today, writing that ?the Cubs are the front-runners to sign Fielder? while also cautioning that ?these negotiations might only be in their early stages.?

According to Rosenthal the Mariners appear to be the Cubs? primary competition and he reports that neither the Marlins nor the Rangers will make a play for Fielder. Another option is the Orioles, but Rosenthal views that as unlikely unless Fielder?s other suitors dry up.

For now at least Rosenthal views Fielder as ?the Cubs? player to lose.?

Video walkthrough of the Verizon Galaxy Nexus navigation vehicle mount and spare battery charger

Youtube link for mobile viewing

What we have here is an excellent video walkthrough of a couple of Verizon Galaxy Nexus accessories that should be available in the morning -- the navigation vehicle mount and the spare battery charging kit -- from forums member Aatrek.

Note it's a "Navigation vehicle mount" and not a "Car dock" or anything. It's a hunk of plastic that the phone sits in, that's all. No contact charging, no Bluetooth audio. In other words, it does not bring, as the kids say, the sex. The spare battery charger, on the other hand, chargers a spare battery. No muss, no fuss.

Oldman exorcises 'ghost of Guinness' with 'Tinker' (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Gary Oldman agonized over whether he should tinker with British spymaster George Smiley, a character who is an institution to John le Carre's readers and already had been played to perfection by Alec Guinness.

The filmmakers behind the big-screen adaptation of le Carre's "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" wanted Oldman to play Smiley so much that they offered him the role before he met with them to talk it over.

Oldman spent a month mulling it over, and even once he had agreed, the actor had a moment of terror a week before shooting, wondering if he could pull it off.

"The ghost of Guinness just sort of loomed so large," Oldman said of Sir Alec, who brilliantly played Smiley on television in a 1979 miniseries of "Tinker" and 1982's "Smiley's People."

Oldman finally exorcised that ghost by likening Smiley to classical roles played again and again by different actors.

"If you're going to play Hamlet, you're going to be measured against all the great Hamlets that have come before you. Or Lear, or Willy Loman, or Blanche DuBois, or whoever," Oldman said in an interview for "Tinker," which opens in U.S. theaters Friday. "You're always going to be somewhat in the shadow of a great performance."

No matter how good Guinness was as the frumpy, unfashionable spy whose bland exterior concealed fierce intellect and drive, Oldman figured he was entitled to create his own incarnation of Smiley.

Good thing. Oldman delivers what could be his finest performance in a career that ranges from notorious dark spirits (Sid Vicious in "Sid and Nancy," Lee Harvey Oswald in "JFK," the bloodsucking fiend of "Dracula) to noble souls (Harry Potter's godfather in the fantasy series, Beethoven in "Immortal Beloved," stalwart policeman Jim Gordon in the current "Batman" franchise).

"The career he's had I truly admire, because it's such a fantastic collection of characters," said Mark Strong, part of a stellar supporting cast in "Tinker" that includes Colin Firth, John Hurt, Tom Hardy, Ciaran Hinds and Toby Jones. "It'll embarrass him, but he is a hero of mine. A lot of guys my age and younger look up to him, because he takes such risks with the parts that he's played."

"Tinker" director Tomas Alfredson calls Oldman the "Swiss Army knife of acting" because of his versatility.

Unlike the frenetic energy he infused in many past characters, Oldman had to bring a stillness to Smiley, who is brought out of retirement to unmask a Russian mole in British intelligence at the height of the Cold War.

"Gary is such a mature actor, he knows that even a neck can be very expressive," Alfredson said. "Like in the beginning of the scene where he gets fired, we're very close to his neck, and we can see how humiliated he is without looking in his eyes. It's fantastic."

The story is a dense one, abridged from a sprawling novel whose action flits about among dozens of key characters all over Europe.

The filmmakers are faithful to le Carre's 1970s setting, subtle dialogue and thoughtful pace. They haven't gussied up the film with car chases and shootouts, letting the action unfold with a slow, meticulous momentum that proves riveting.

"There's a sort of industry wisdom, an unchallenged sort of thing out there, that this is serious adult drama that studios don't want to make, and people shouldn't be writing it, people shouldn't be directing it, and audiences don't want to see it. I like to think we've proved them wrong," Oldman said.

Already a hit in Britain, where it opened in September, "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" comes into a wide-open Academy Awards season with great buzz for Oldman's best-actor prospects.

Oscar contender would be a new role for Oldman, 53, one of those actors so universally respected you'd figure he must have half a dozen past nominations behind him. But not only has Oldman never won an Oscar ? he's never been nominated.

"It's never really bothered me. I just go about my life and my thing and work. And there are moments in careers where the light shines on you, and you recede, you go back into the shadows. There're ups and downs in a career," said Oldman, who likes the sound of his awards chatter.

"I am flattered, to be very truthful. I'm enjoying it. ... I've heard it before, and it might be my time. I mean, for a nomination. I'd be happy with that."

Oldman reprises his role as Police Commissioner Gordon opposite Christian Bale's Batman in next summer's "The Dark Knight Rises," the finale to director Christopher Nolan's acclaimed superhero franchise.

Details remain under wraps, but Oldman gushes about the film.

"I'm sworn to secrecy, and we're not allowed to really talk about it much. But I can say this much, that the story's terrific. That he's going to really go out with a bang," Oldman said.

There's talk of sending Smiley out with another bang. The filmmakers are considering an adaptation of le Carre's follow-up novel "Smiley's People," possibly incorporating elements of another Smiley adventure, "The Honourable Schoolboy."

Oldman said he would love to have another go at Smiley, another chance to take on the "ghost of Guinness."

"I love the tradition of Guinness and Peter Sellers, those kinds of actors, even Laurence Olivier, I guess. You only have to think of `Kind Hearts and Coronets,' where Guinness, I think, plays seven members of the family, doesn't he?" Oldman said.

"You see yourself as part of that tradition, and you're aspiring to be as great as these people. So he was a hero of mine, and just a big dragon to slay. And at the end of the day, I think he was perhaps there as a friendly ghost."
